Phyllis Ketilson

PHYLLIS JOAN KETILSON It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Phyllis Joan Ketilson on October 18, 2010. She was born on October 21, 1925 in Bucklebury, near Newbury, Berkshire, England, the 4th of 5 children. During World War II she met Sigurdur Bergthor (Beggi) Ketilson. After the war ended, their courtship continued via "airmail". In early 1950 she boarded the ship Empress of Canada, for Canada, to wed Beggi on June 10, 1950. Two years later, they started their family, finally making their home in Leslie, Sask. In 1965 Mom was able to go back to England, with the whole family. It was at that time that her Dad came back to live with us for a year. In 1974 the family moved to Saskatoon. Mom then started to work as an aid at Sherbrooke Nursing Home, until her retirement. She cherished the time when the family was around her, making meals on short notice, including pies and chiffon cakes. In her spare time she would knit or do cross word puzzles. We will always remember her for the many traditions from fully decorated birthday cakes to the big gatherings at Christmas (singing Christmas Carols and eating all that baking!!). As well, she never gave up her English heritage. It was always a part of her life. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Hubert and Emily Athawes, husband Beggi, brothers John and Bill, sister Amy, sisters-in-law Audrey, Mary, Sigga, Gunna, Lucy and Dora, brothers-in-law Ketil, Sonner, Emil, Ken, Gordon, Skuli, nephew Grant and niece Karen. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Brenda (Rick) Stroshein, Gail (Robert) Paquette, Cheryl Whalen, Graham (Nola), Diane (Andy) Sebulski, Kevin (Xinia); 16 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren, brother Gerald, sister-in-law Inga and brother-in-law Jack, many nieces and nephews, and their families. The family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff at Stensrud Lodge for the care given while Mom was there. The Memorial service will be held at Stensrud Lodge, 2202 McEown Avenue, Saskatoon, Sk. S7J 3L6 on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #104 2301 Avenue C. No., Saskatoon, Sask. S7L 5Z5, or Stensrud Lodge.
