Published by Calgary Herald from Nov. 5 to Nov. 7, 2014.

PARDY, Randell Bruce
1956 - 2014
With deep sadness, we announce that Randell Bruce Pardy passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 30, 2014. His passing came after many years of slow decline and much acute suffering in recent months. Randell was 58. He leaves his beloved family, Jackie Sheppard, wife of 35 years and sons, William and David. Randell also leaves his father and mother, Bruce and Cynthia Pardy, of St. John's, Newfoundland; his siblings, twin brother Richard of Orlando, Florida; sister Jane also of St. John's; and brother Keith and his wife Caroline of Atlanta, Georgia. Randell will also be dearly missed by Jackie's family, his mother-in-law Joy Sheppard; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Joan and Tom Sharpe, Myra Sheppard and Brian Pevlin, Glenys and David Saunders, Pauline Sheppard and Brian Wolfe, Carl Sheppard and Judy Craig. Although too many to name, he leaves behind a large extended family in Canada and the US. Throughout his lengthy illness, Randell and his immediate family were devotedly supported by Glenys and David Saunders, Jackie's sister and brother-in- law. Randell received wonderful care and companionship from his long-term caregivers, Jonathan Montanez, Felipe Ocampo, Jose Gorospe, Marie Ocampo, Leala Fernandez, Choi Lopez, Malou Feliciano and Nenette Leonard. Throughout the years, Jackie's sisters, Joan, Myra and Pauline and their spouses also provided considerable direct support. Randell was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on February 14, 1956. As a star academic, he completed a BSc in Physics at Memorial University in 1977, graduating as the gold medallist, a BA and MA in Engineering Science at Oxford University in 1979, and a MBA at the University of Calgary in 1990. He entered the upstream energy business in Alberta in 1981, where he led a very successful career until prematurely ending it in 2003, due to his illness. He began his oil and gas career at Dome Petroleum and, following its legendary demise, moved with his mentor to Canterra Energy. Subsequently, he held executive positions at North Star Energy, Tethys Energy and Resolute Energy. He was a Co-Founder, President and CEO of both Tethys and Resolute. Throughout his career Randell actively participated in energy groups and lead several policy studies. As a corporate leader, Randell was always admired for his intellectual interest in the industry but also for his workplace fairness and integrity. Randell met Jackie when they were both 17. They attended Memorial and Oxford Universities together and were married in 1979, while Jackie attended McGill and Randell worked at SNC-Lavalin. They travelled widely, pursuing history and art, or hiking adventures. Randell read extensively and was an avid runner, mountain hiker, and all-around sportsman and outdoors man. Of particular note were his wilderness canoe trip in central Newfoundland with his diary, his multi-year lettered chess game challenges with friends, and his two holes-in-one playing golf. Family life also centred around the education of his sons, travel, and sports with fabulous year-round family time in the mountains, on the lake, and on the ski slopes of the Windermere Lake area in British Colombia. Those close to Randell knew of his many other sides including his belief that teaching is the highest calling. He would undoubtedly have made the education of youth a part of his retirement pursuits if not thwarted by ill health. As well, his family, many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends knew he was always plotting a good-natured prank and they of course sought their reprisals, usually with less stealth or success. He will be forever loved, admired and missed. And, for those who knew him best, his memory will always bring a smile. In keeping with Randell's wishes, a Memorial gathering of family and friends will take place at a later time. His ashes will be spread as he wished. Anyone wishing to make a donation in honour of Randell's life and challenges are invited to consider The Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine, HRIC 1A10, 3330 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N1 (cheque must be made payable to the "University of Calgary") or to the Canadian Cancer Society, Alberta/NWT Division, 200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5, Tel: (403) 205-3966, www.cancer.ca. We were very sad to hear of Randy's passing. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Jackie, William, David and the whole family. Memories of the boy's weekends in Windermere, Halloween parties with Randell the priest, tennis grudge matches and Sunday morning football games - all bring out a smile.

I was very sorry to hear of Randy's death and I extend my condolences to his family. Randy was a close friend during our junior high and high school years. Many good memories come back to me of our road hockey, Friday night Kraft home made pizzas, weekends at the Pardy cabin, school sports and time spent just hanging out. They were the formative years for us and Randy was a big part of mine.
Again, i am sorry to hear of this and i extend my condolences.
Sincerely, John Eaton
