Richard "Rick" Edward Bishop

"He Fixed Stuff and He Knew Things"

Rick passed from this world and went to be with the Lord, on Wednesday December 18, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

Rick was born April 4, 1941, in Cambridge Massachusetts. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1958. After graduating he joined the Marine Corp. in 1960 and never completely left. He served his country honorably and was attached to the VMA-533 "Hawks". He was present during the Cuban Missile Crisis and served in Vietnam.

During a leave home he met his future wife, Carol Chattin, who had moved in across the street while he was away. Rick and Carol met over a case of mistaken identity and a well targeted snowball. They were wed on May 2, 1964, and made their home in Billerica, MA. The love between Rick and Carol grew to include 3 children, 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Rick was devoted to following Jesus all his life. His unwavering faith guided the paths he chose and the life he loved so dearly. He was a dedicated husband and father; his wife and children always knew they were the center of his world. He loved gardening, cooking, photography, traveling, fishing and all things aviation. He was an avid reader and always interested in learning new things. In his younger days he had a passion for skydiving, motorcycle riding and hunting. He had a positive effect on all he encountered and was always quick with a smile. He loved an audience and never ran out of stories to tell.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Phyllis (Marecki) Bishop, brother Paul Bishop, sisters Phyllis Waz and Christine Browne, granddaughter Jessie Lee Crider and great grandson Alex LaCasse.

Rick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol, his children Karen Green, Pamela (Bill) Nadeau and Richard (Corinne) Bishop; his grandchildren: James (Lacey), Ronnie, Nicole, Mary, Sheryl (Shane), Francine, Michelle (Joe), Zach (Nikki), John (Amiee), Julie, and Sophia, nineteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a brother Ken Bishop and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at St. Theresa's church in Billerica MA on Tuesday Feb. 11, 2025, at 10:00AM, with a graveside service to follow immediately at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:45PM.

I´d like to start by saying on behalf of myself, my mother and sisters, Thank You ALL for coming together in gesture of support for a great man, my Dad, Rick Bishop.
Today I´m here to speak for my family about our patriarch. Who we lost in body on December 18th.
Our Dad was a devoted husband, married for 61 years. He was an example of understanding, patients and forgiveness. I can think of no better example of the commitment that is marriage.
He was an amazing father and grandfather. Grampi loved nothing more than spending time with us. No distance was too great for his love.
He was an incredible human being. Who spent his life freely giving without ever expecting anything in return.
His memory is a source of comfort to us all. Remember him often and reflect on his wisdom from the stories he always told. They had a lesson to learn and a part of who he was in each.
Every day he was an inspiration and role model. He taught us faith, self discipline, integrity, morality, and a strong work ethic.
Dad thank you for being the best example of what a man and a father is supposed to be and thank you for:
Bishop´s holidays, his random day off that we did just to celebrate being a family.
Barbeques on the weekends
Pool parties at Mom and Dad´s house
Always making the best eggs when stayed over
For laughing when we drove away with the camper and the legs flew off a mile away.
For teaching us that no matter how boring it is to read the instructions before you try and build it.
The sacrifices of being a parent and driving us to dance, soccer, ROTC, hockey, skiing and adventures far and wide.
And thank you most of all for teaching us to have a relationship with God, to pray, be faithful, kind and appreciate the values of integrity and respect.
Thank you Dad!
Your legacy lives on in all of us!!

Share a memory of my Dad? There are so many how can I choose one! Do I share the one when he taught me to ride a bike in the back yard and the feeling of pure joy I had when I got it or do I share memories of taking our boat out on the Concord River; catching my first fish and him smiling ear to ear with me. Maybe I share the time him and I went up in a Cessna out of Tew-Mac airport in Tewksbury and I got to take the controls when I was 13 or 14yrs old. I'll never know how much control I actually had, but as far as I was concerned...I was flying!! Do I share memories of family dinners? Polish Chili? Sunday morning church and donuts after. Maybe its how he talked me off the cliff when I found myself alone assembling Christmas gifts for preschoolers that depended on me at midnight on Christmas eve. Maybe its the birthday card he gave me when I turned 16. I think I will share how my Dad guided me in faith. He taught me to have a strong, unwavering faith...even when God says no

a shared experience I had with my dad. was when I came back from an ROTC trip. my dad came to pick me up on his motorcycle. I had two big bags and a pocketbook with me. we piled everything on the motorcycle. and raced home before it rained. we just pulled in the driveway when we felt the first rain drops. we Grabbed all the bags and ran in the house.

One of my favorite memories of Grampy is him reading me books at the Billerica public library. We used to sit in the same spot each time, him in a big wooden rocking chair and me in a miniature version. He was so kind and patient trying to teach me to read.
