He was my CO in Vietnam, the best officer I ever had. Great leader. Everyone thought he was going to be a general, but a bullet got in the way. My book about the war tells this story too. It was nominated as best historical fiction of 2012 by the Military Writers Society of America. Traces of a Lost War on Amazon.com.

Dear Jane and family, I had the priviledge of working with Dr. Eckert many times over the past 8 years @ Occupational Health in South Richmond County. After reading his obituary and attending his funeral today, I am just beginning to comprehend what a Godsend he was to us all....I just thought I knew him before, but I only knew a tiny, tiny piece of him. How incredibly blessed you all were to call him husband, father, grandfather. How blessed we were to call him friend; however, he was "our family" @ University, too. Thank you for sharing him with us; he truly blessed our lives.

Dear Jane, Ellen and I are so very saddened to hear about Dick. I have always credited Dick for being a major part of my training in Pediatrics, and keeping me on track through my first 2 years at Fitzsimons. I always think of Dick as a role model of what excellence in medicine should be, but it is also obvious that he is what a man should be in all aspects of life. I will never forget how you would feed us when we were on call together, as if being on call with Dick was not reward enough. It is clear that you and Dick built a long and wonderful life together with an outstanding family, but I know your heart is broken. I hope knowing how much you and Dick meant to so many people will help you through these dark days. You are all in our thoughts.

Dear Jane & Family,
Dick and I were West Point classmates. I admired him personally and professionally and was delighted when we went to Okinawa for our first assignment. Although our lives and careers took different paths, I shall always treasure having known and served with him.
May God bless and watch over you.

Dear Jane,
Dick was a hero and inspiration to all and a man we were so very proud to call 'family.' I know my parents adored him and blessed the day you two met. Your Ohio Family sends their love and sympathy to you and 'the kids.' We were there at the start of your earthly lives together; we wish we had been able to be there at the end.
With love, Annie

To my sister and her family, I express my deepest sympathy. There was no finer person alive than Dick Eckert, we all looked up to him, respected him and loved him dearly. We are all better people for knowing him. He was always there in time of need and sorrow, as well as the many happy moments we all shared. He loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren, they were his life. So we say goodbye to him with great sadness, but know that his love will forever live in our hearts and souls.
Thinking of you all,
Susan
