Richard Shannon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2025.
Richard (Rick) F. Shannon

July 17, 1937 - April 18, 2025

Richard (Rick) F. Shannon, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, at the age of 88 in San Diego, California. A proud United States Marine, Rick lived a life defined by service, devotion, and generosity. His unwavering commitment to excellence carried through his distinguished 60-year career in the transportation industry, where he played a pivotal role in global trade.

Over four decades, Rick held senior leadership positions, managing vessel and cargo operations across major trade routes, including assignments in Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, and China. He later founded Amerussia Ltd. in Russia and Amerussia Shipping Company in the United States, representing major national shipping lines, and ultimately served as President of Atlantic Ro-Ro Carriers.

Beyond his professional achievements, Rick was a devoted friend of Bill W. for 57 years, living each day with gratitude, resilience, and grace. His warmth, humor, and steadfast support left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Rick's legacy lives on through his beloved family: his children from his first marriage to Nancy - Brian Shannon (and his partner, Bea Lhotak) and Christine Parker (and her husband, Stephen) - as well as his cherished wife, Tanya Shannon, and her daughter, Anna Stanchik (and her husband, Santosh). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Nicholas, Zachary, Ryan, Christina, Michael, Joseph, and Nikki.

He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Ruth Shannon, and his siblings, Michael, Robert (Bob), Dennis, and Maureen.

Rick's enduring spirit, compassion, and commitment to others will be deeply missed and forever treasured by his family, friends, and colleagues. His life was a testament to courage, kindness, and perseverance - qualities that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have know him.

I only belatedly today found out about Rick's passing. I first met him in 1993 in St. Petersburg when he paid a courtesy call on the U.S. Consulate General and we struck up an acquaintance that over the years since then blossomed into a professional and social friendship punctuated by regular phone calls and dinners when our different schedules brought us together. I will miss him very much.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Rick in early 2022. While he was considered as a high up colleague, he became my true friend in our time working together. He shared stories of his history in travel around the world; work and the important roles he has been a part of that for sure kept me intrigued and with much laughter. He gave positive feedback and wanted the absolute best for everyone he encountered. He developed a special liking in my dog, Dakota and only called to check in on her :) While we worked as colleagues, we shared many personal stories and experiences as friends and checking in on one another as family. He is surly missed, and my memories will be of the fondest! I am grateful for Mr. Shannon.

I met Rick in the 80s when I was running a small ship container service and Rick was the president of Exchange Transport, our agents in New York. I was recently married and my wife was still abroad; when Rick found out that I was living at the Marriott Hotel and I didn't know anyone in town, he took me to his home, told poor Christine that he needed her room and put me there for a few months. He made me part of his family with Nancy, Bryan and Christine. We had many weekends watching Jobn Wayne movies and eating Hagen Daaz ice cream; I will never forget you my dear friend, you were a good man, a kind hearted person who helped everyone around. I will sorely miss you. May you rest in the peace of the Lord

I met Rick in 2011 and was immediately drawn in with his charming personality. He managed to connect and leave a lasting impression on all he met. He had so many stories to tell about his years in the shipping industry and just about his life in general. All the things he did over the years, funny and fascinating. He loved his wife Tanya immensely and spoke often of his children, all of whom he was very proud of their accomplishments. Rick, my dear, sweet friend and colleague, you will be missed beyond words. Rest well and in peace.

Rick was a great friend and a legend in the logistics business
One of a kind
His love of family, the USA , Russia, and the shipping industry is what he lived for.
I kidded Rick about retiring ...and with a straight face said `what would I do except what I love.´
After knowing Rick for several decades you would think I would have heard all the stories of the old days in the industry...you would be wrong as there were unending industry stories and its characters. As well as old movies including his favorite `The Quiet Man´ ...good ole John Wayne
Blessings to his family and friends
RIP my friend

I met Rick in 1996 in Russia. He was my mentor. If it was not for Rick I would not be the successful person I am today in the logistics industry.

Love you Rick !!

I kept in touch with Rick after meeting him in Park SLope Brooklyn 15 Years ago at A Friends Of Bill meeting. We got together a handful of times since then and stayed in touch by phone after he moved to Texas and San Diego. We talked about the State Of Affairs on occasion and Rick was knowledgeable and witty about many things..May he Rest In Peace, A Real Patriot.... Johnny Barrett
