Robert DeYoung Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 10 to Jan. 13, 2009.
Robert T. DeYOUNG April 7, 1924 ~ January 2, 2009 Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, even though Bob passed away unexpectedly it was peaceful and he was surrounded by family. Survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 62 years, and by children Michael (Flossie) of Stanwood, Patricia Rigali (James) and Virginia Dublin (Mark) of Seattle, Richard (Karen) of Snohomish, and Edith Matulka (Michael) of Lynnwood; grandchildren Brenda Vander Pol (Brent), Barb Newe (Chris), Bonnie Geers (Jeff), Valerie Brown (Bob), Susan Barnett (John), Rachel Mathias (Ben), Jennifer Bresler (Jason), Dakota DeYoung, Zane DeYoung, Patrick Matulka and Alec Matulka; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Also survived by brothers Lowell DeYoung (Stella) and Al DeYoung (Donna), of Woodinville, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Milford and James DeYoung, and sister Frances Gasslander. A graduate of Bothell High School (class of 1942), Bob was a WWII veteran, having served in the Army (355th Engineers) in Europe. He also served his local community throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, on the Woodinville and Northshore School Boards, Bothell Library Board, Bothell City Council, and as Mayor of Bothell. Bob was a man of great integrity, with an overriding sense of fairness and justice, character traits that guided his life and which he passed on to his family. Beyond everything else, Bob loved his family. He was a devoted attendee of his grandchildren's sporting events, plays, and various other school activities, and would proudly share word of their doings with anyone and everyone. In the best sense of the phrase, Bob was a "people person". You always knew when he was in a room, and his love and laughter will be missed by so many. A celebration of his life will be held on January 20th from 2 - 5:00 p.m. at the Country Inn and Suites - 19333 North Creek Parkway, Bothell, WA. A light buffet will be served, and a sharing of memories and stories will begin at 3. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Bob's honor may be made to Evergreen Healthcare Foundation (MS-5), Hospice Services, 12040 NE 128th Street, Kirkland, WA 98034.

Bob and his wife Barbara are long time friends of my parents Glenn and Betty Armstrong and of our family Steve and Lisa (Armstrong) Dolan. The best way for me to describe Bob is giving, serious, bold, silly, hardworking, heartfelt always an amazing gift to all who knew him! Our thoughts are with all of you and with Bob God's speed.

I remember Bob from many family gatherings over the years. He was always warm and friendly and interested in what was going on in my life. My heartfelt sympathies are with his wife, Bobbie, and his kids at this time, remembering them also.

Uncle Bob was always one of my favorites to run into at a family gathering. Always smiling, always funny, always something interesting and/or comical to say. I am proud to have known him.

I was so very sorry to hear about the passing of Bob DeYoung. I went to school with his youngest daughter Edie, I remeber Mr DeYoung as our "Lilly" league softball coach. He was a man of great patience. I will keep your family and Mrs. DeYoung in my thoughts.

I was saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I was fortunate to have known Bob in 3 different capacities...first, he was our mailman...route 1 in Woodinville. Second, I was a friend and classmate of his daughter, Patty. When we started first grade at Woodinville, she and I were the tallest first graders and had to sit at a special table they brought into the classroom! I was fortunate to have been invited periodically to the DeYoung home thru my friendship with Patty...first when they lived on what we called the Power Line Road and then when they moved up by Cottage Lake...what a treat for me! Lastly, I remember when Bob and Ray Braga bought the resort on Cottage Lake from the Erickson family...what a lot of memories come to mind. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the DeYoung family at this difficult time.

My heart goes out to the DeYoung and Matulka families at this very difficult time. Mr. DeYoung was a nice man and wonderful grandfather to the boys. Meghan and I continue to keep you in our prayers.

Bob was the Bostian Road, Woodinville, mailman during the 1950's. We Egbert children loved him. We'd call "There's Bob!" and he'd greet us with a cheerful smile and wave. He was a favorite friend of our childhood.
