Robert Jackman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2016.
Robert S. Jackman August 7, 1940 - December 6, 2015 SAN DIEGO ~ Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand ~Dr. Robert S. Jackman, DVM, lovingly known as "Dr. Bob" and "Sam" to many, peacefully succumbed after a year-long bout with cancer, surrounded by family and friends at home, on December 6, 2015. Bob was born on August 7, 1940 in Steubenville, Ohio to his parents Harry William Jackman and Mildred Leone Norris (Jackman). He was the younger brother to James Jackman and sister, Donna Jackman Lockmyer. He was a graduate of Fortville (IN) H.S. and then went on to graduate from Purdue University with a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1964. During this time, he also played trumpet in the famous Purdue Marching Band, and was a member of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity. After Purdue, he completed post-doctorate work at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, during which time he met and married Kathleen Mullally (Jackman), in 1965. In 1967, Bob and Kathy moved to San Diego when Dr. Bob joined Turquoise Animal Hospital in Pacific Beach and subsequently practiced for 40 years first with Dr. Millwood Custer, and then solely as the proud owner of the Turquoise Animal Hospital. Shortly after settling in San Diego, the Jackman's joined the Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC), where Bob competitively raced Skimmer and then Snipe class sailboats, as well as holding various offices of the yacht club Board of Directors. He was also a founding member of a non-profit organization at the yacht club known as JIB Juniors in Boating, founded to promote and support San Diego junior sailors in their efforts locally, nationally and internationally. The organization is near and dear to him and he was an active member of the board until his passing after approximately 35 years of service. Dr. Jackman was also active in the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association (SDCVMA), and is a past President from 1977.Dr. Jackman was preceded in death by his sister Donna Jackman Lockmyer. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen, and son John, John's wife Courtney and their children Jordyn, Jenna, and Jonah, and step-granddaughter Ashley Kowallek. He is also survived by his brother Jim, Jim's wife Venetia, their two children and two grandchildren.Besides being known around town as a highly-ethical "old school" small animal practitioner, and a very active sailboat racer, Dr. Bob was well-known in jazz circles in San Diego as an ardent supporter of the extensive jazz scene in this area.Dr. Jackman, his charismatic and loving nature, and his sense of humor will be sorely missed by all his family, friends and clients.A celebration of life will be held at the Mission Bay Yacht Club on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. The family asks in lieu of flowers, tax-deductible contributions be made to: "Juniors in Boating JIB Support Boat Fund" via MBYC at 1215 El Carmel Place, San Diego, CA 92109, or to a charity of your choice.

I know the Fortville High School Class of 1958 has lost a wonderful member. Condolences to his immediate family and many friends. He was always 'Sam' to me and to many other of his classmates.

Oh, Kathy and John - I am so sorry to hear this news today. You were all family to us growing up, and Bob is deeply missed. He provided a ballast, a rudder in the water for us all with his gentle, super smart and reliable manner. The world is a lesser place without him. Sending you much love,

Uncle Bob was a great man! I always enjoyed his company and when I married his nephew Justin, he and Aunt Kathy were so welcoming into the family. The world lost a great man and I'm lucky enough to say that I got to know him. I will miss him dearly!!

Bob was a regular fixture at so many jazz concerts, always there with his wife. I loved seeing him and talking with him about the music -- he was very erudite and open-minded. He will be missed!
