Miami, Florida - Robert Joseph Mezey, MD passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the age of 75 after a courageous 20-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. Robert "Bobby" is survived by his loving wife, Judith Paul Mezey, daughter Jennifer (Brett) Schwartz, son Barry Mezey, granddaughters Lauren, Ellie & Caroline Schwartz, brother Andrew (Mathy) Mezey, uncle Milton (Joan) Bagley, nieces Susan (Lenny), Laura (Michael), Judy (Larry), Nancy (Karen) and their families, and several cousins.
Bobby was born on July 25, 1946, in the old French Hospital in Manhattan, NY to Laci and Henriette Mezey who immigrated from Budapest Hungary in 1939 with their two-year old son, Andrew. Bobby and his older brother, Andy, grew up in the west Bronx, six blocks north of Yankee Stadium. He attended Bronx High School of Science, graduating in 1963 at the age of 16. In the summer of 1965, Bobby met the love of his life, Judith Paul, while they were both camp counselors in the Catskills. They married on April 6, 1968.
Bobby graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in chemistry from Clark University in 1967 and graduated AOA from Albert Einstein Medical School in 1971. Bobby completed a 3-year residency at Montifiore Hospital in the Bronx before moving to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida in 1974, where he served as a Major in the United States Air Force.
The family moved to Miami in 1976 where Bobby began his Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach. This move also marked the beginning of numerous lifelong friendships. Upon completion of his fellowship, Bobby opened a private medical practice in Miami where he dedicated his professional life to providing exceptional and compassionate care to his patients.
Bobby was the ultimate family man; a devoted husband, an extraordinary father and a doting grandfather. His love for his family brought him the greatest joy in life. Bobby was a magnificent friend, a highly respected physician, a lifelong Yankee fan who loved classic rock 'n roll and had a witty, dry sense of humor. Bobby was a brilliant, refined, soft-spoken, compassionate, selfless, patient, and humble man. To some, he was a superhero. Bobby lived his entire life with grace and dignity and will be sorely missed by the people whose lives he touched.
