Robert R. Welling

Robert R. Welling age 73, of rural Blanchard passed away Sunday at his home. Born January 10, 1930 in Pontiac, MI., to Marvin & Hazel (Kelly) Welling. Shortly after his birth they moved to Remus where his father opened a garage on the site of the present dairy bar. A few years later, they built a garage in the building next to Helens Restaurant with living space above it. Here Bob grew up, in the heart of Remus and graduated from Remus High School in 1948. He was also a life member of the Remus Masonic Lodge. On Sept. 1, 1950, he married Alice Esch of Morley and they moved to the Blanchard area where they spent the next 53 years. He worked for Masons Motor Sales in Blanchard for a few years and then he became a mechanic for the Remus Creamery in the building occupied by Wellings Service now. They purchased the garage and gas station when the creamery closed down and here their 5 sons learned the garage business and are serving the area yet today. He spent many of his years drumming for dances in the area with “Randy and Julies Goodtime Band” until 2001, when his health failed him. He loved hunting and fishing and spent many years fishing in Canada with his pals. Leaving to mourn are his wife, Alice and 5 sons and families: Robert Jr. (Bobbi) of Lansing, Ronald of Blanchard, Roger of Owosso, Ric (Chris) and Ray (Tami) both of Remus. A sister-in-law, Patricia Welling of Mecosta. Also 14 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only brother Russ and his only daughter, Jinny Lynn. Funeral Services: 1:00 pm Wednesday Dec. 10, 2003 at the Crittenden-Hansen Funeral Home of Remus, MI.. Visitation 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday at funeral home.
