Roger Wrolstad Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 8, 2024.
Roger Allen Wrolstad, a man of unwavering strength, profound dedication, and boundless love, peacefully passed away at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on April 7th, 2024. He was born on November 25th, 1946, to Joel and Dolores (Holmes) Wrolstad. Roger grew up on the family farm in southeast Minnesota.
Upon graduating from Kenyon High School, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Roger's life journey was one of extraordinary service and achievement. While at Concordia College, Roger embarked on a path of selfless commitment by enrolling in the Officer Candidate School program for the United States Marines, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Roger served two tours in Vietnam, rising through the ranks to retire as a lieutenant colonel after 21 years of distinguished service.
Not content with one career, Roger pursued higher education, earning his master's degree and transitioning to a second career at the University of New Mexico. For 20 years, he dedicated himself to the university, ultimately retiring as the Director of Johnson Center, leaving an indelible mark on the institution and the countless lives he touched.
Roger's passion for physical challenges was not just a hobby but a testament to his character. His pursuit of triathlons, where his sheer will and mental fortitude propelled him to remarkable achievements, was a source of inspiration for many. He completed eight Ironman triathlons and countless other races, earning a national ranking within his age group. His motto, 'I am just willing to suffer more than the next guy,' epitomized his relentless determination and competitive spirit, inspiring admiration in all who knew him.
Beyond his professional and athletic pursuits, Roger's love for life radiated through his storytelling, his joy for the outdoors, and his penchant for 'fast things.' Yet, above all, his devotion to his family was unparalleled. Roger is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Rosalina; three sons, George (and Katie) Wrolstad, Mark (and Jayme) Wrolstad, and Erik (and Vanessa) Wrolstad; seven grandchildren, Ava, Cruz, Jack, Mack, Ronin, Kal, and Graham; one sister, Elise Wrolstad of Kenyon, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Paul Finholm of Kenyon, Minnesota; nieces and nephews. Roger is preceded in death by his parents, brother Mark Wrolstad (2000) and Joel Wrolstad (2019). Roger leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and unwavering support that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
A memorial/celebration-of-life event will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1st, at Johnson Center, University of New Mexico. Family and friends will gather to honor Roger's memory, share stories, and celebrate the extraordinary life of a remarkable man who touched so many with his kindness, strength, and boundless spirit.
