ATCHISON, Kan. - Roland E. Dutton, 75, Atchison, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Mo.
Roland was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Sparta, Wis., the son of Walter and Pearl Davis Dutton.
He and the former Joyce Anne Hanum were united in marriage on May 10, 1951, in Hernando, Miss. Mrs. Dutton survives of the home.
Roland enlisted in the United States Army in June, 1949, and was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant on Aug. 4, 1953. He received numerous distinguished medals, retiring from active service as a lieutenant colonel on June 30, 1969.
He was a 1971 graduate of Benedictine College, where he received a bachelor's degree and later received his master's degree from Wichita (Kan.) State University.
He served as a case worker for the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., and later served as a probation officer for Atchison County and Leavenworth County, Kan., until he began teaching in the Staff and General Command College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., until his retirement in 1993.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Linda Steinbach, Quincy, Ill.; two sons, David Dutton, Reston, Va.; and Roland E. Dutton Jr., Dayton, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pauline DeVoe; and five brothers, Eldon, Ralph, Kenny, LaVerne and Wayne Dutton.
A memorial service will be Thursday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison. A private inurnment of the ashes will be at a later date in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kan. The family will receive friends for one hour preceding the service at the funeral home.
