Mr. Roy Virgil Pogue, age 71,a resident of De Queen, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born on Monday, July 13, 1931 in the Red Colony Community east of Lockesburg, Arkansas, to the late Madison Agner and Ruthie Mae Traywick Pogue.

He grew up and attended school in Southwest Oklahoma. He was a U.S. Army Veteran joining at the age of seventeen. He served a tour of duty in Germany with the 1st Division 26th Infantry Regiment, then two tours of duty to Korea. During his stays in the states he was an instructor of Mines and Warfare at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas. He also participated in an A-Bomb test in Nevada in the spring of 1953.

Among his many medals he was awarded two purple hearts, combat Infantry badge, several battle stars and the Bronze Star with valor.

Between his tours of duty in Korea he married Naydean Nelson on December 20, 1952.

After his military service he spent most of his working years as a General Superintendent of heavy construction including work on the Highway 41 Little River bridge, local dams and dams and locks on the Arkansas River, and the Millwood Dam bridge. Later years he worked building and remodeling Federal cotton warehouses and compresses.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, step-granddad and friend to all he knew.

He was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, a charter member of the Cossatot Volunteer Fire Department and a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Elish A. Pogue and R.F. Pogue; a sister: Betty Lou Thurman.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Naydean Nelson Pogue; one daughter and son-in-law: Lillian and C.R. Finley of Cerro Gordo; three sons and daughters-in-law: Roy E. Pogue, David and Amanda Pogue and Dennis and Sheila Pogue, all of De Queen; nine grandsons: Dillon Pogue, Todd Finley, Don Adcock, Ryan Scott, Dustin and Derrick Durham, Tyler Ginn, Jason and Nathan Brooks; four granddaughters: Jayde and Cara Pogue, Branda Gathright, and Dana Walls; a brother and sister-in-law: John and Edith Pogue of Coolidge, Arizona; a sister: Sarah Rolen of Idabel, Oklahoma and a host of special in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral Services for Mr. Pogue will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 19, 2003 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bobby Neal officiating. Burial will follow in the Redmen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 18 at the funeral home.
