Rudolph DiTrapano Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 25, 2017.
Rudolph Lidano DiTrapano, 89, of Charleston, West Virginia, died October 25, 2017, in Charleston, West Virginia at home surrounded by family after a valiant fight with cancer. Rudy was born July 25, 1928, in Charleston, West Virginia and lived in Cabin Creek during his early life. He was the son of the late Luigi and Amelia DiTrapano who emigrated from Italy. Also, preceding him in death, were his son Lidano Albert DiTrapano, his brother, Virgil DiTrapano, and his sister, Carla Loretta McGoldrick. Rudolph is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Veazey DiTrapano, his children, Luisa DiTrapano (Cyrus) of Charleston, Dante' diTrapano (Teri) of Charleston, Lia DiTrapano Fairless (L.J.) of South Charleston, Giancarlo DiTrapano (Giuseppe) of Rome, Italy; his grandchildren Zachary diTrapano of Knoxville, TN, Niccia diTrapano of Charleston, Santino diTrapano of Charleston, Ben Fairless of Boone, NC, Sofia diTrapano of Charleston, and Francesca Fairless of South Charleston; his great-grandchildren, Braelyn Oldham of Knoxville, TN and Natalia Valentine of Charleston, and his sister, Evelyn DiTrapano of Charleston, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family in Italy. Rudolph graduated from Charleston Catholic High School, and went on to become a "Double Domer" earning an undergraduate and law degree at the University of Notre Dame. Rudy was an all-around athlete but was best known for his boxing skills where he fought throughout high school, college and the military. After he obtained his Doctorate of Jurisprudence, he enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served in the JAG Corps where he first plied his skills as a lawyer. Upon his return to West Virginia, he opened a law practice in Chelyan. He went on to be the founding member of DiTrapano & Jackson, which evolved into DiTrapano, Barrett, DiPiero, McGinely & Simmons. He practiced law for 65 years focusing on criminal defense and personal injury litigation. According to Rudy, he tried more cases than anyone in the State of West Virginia. Rudy successfully argued and won a case for a West Virginia legislator in the United States Supreme Court of Appeals. Throughout his career, he participated in cases that resulted in over 100 published opinions. In addition to being a former State Democratic Chairman and serving as campaign manager for multiple gubernatorial candidates, Rudy remained active in West Virginia politics throughout his life. Rudy voted a straight democratic ticket his entire life. Rudy was active in the community serving on numerous boards including: the West Virginia Symphony, University of Charleston, City National Bank, and Wheeling Jesuit University. As a true Renaissance man, he enjoyed playing the violin, reciting poetry, reading books, making wine, and preparing Italian cuisine. Rudy also enjoyed snow skiing, fishing, pheasant hunting and rowing his scull on the Kanawha River where he resided for the last 50 years. Rudy had a huge personality. Anyone who ever spent time with him had the opportunity to enjoy stories, jokes or simply his quick witted responses. In his law office, Rudy would exit any conversation, if someone gave him a "heads up", had "all their ducks in a row", wanted to "touch base", or complained of a "full plate". Being an innately amusing person, he was a source of entertainment to family and friends, until he took his last breath. The family would like to thank Hospice nurse Kelly and special care giver Jamie. A Funeral Mass to Honor the Life of Rudolph DiTrapano will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 305 E. Street, South Charleston with Father John Finnell officiating. Burial will take place in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Family and Friends may visit from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, October 27, 2017 at Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lidano DiTrapano Scholarship Fund benefitting Sacred Heart and Charleston Catholic, C/O Sacred Heart Co Cathedral, 1114 Virginia St E, Charleston, WV 25301. To the family of Rudy
Kent and I are so sorry to hear the horrible news of Rudy's passing. I never got that pleasure of meeting any of you but through the stories Kent has shared I feel I know some. Kent has told me some pretty amazing things about Rudy. So many stories funny and then some not so funny. He always admired Rudy. May he rest in peace ♡

Rudy was the very first attorney that I ever worked for at the young age of 19. Needless to say that I learned a lot about the law, but Rudy's work ethic was unmeasurable - I highly doubt that anything or anyone will ever compare. His love for his family even in hard circumstances was also unmeasurable - never ending. After I left the firm and many years down the road, I ran into Rudy and he still remembered me. Rest in heaven Rudy!!!

I, like so many other's always experienced the grace and warmth of Rudy when in his company. I will always remember, as special, occasions working with him as a young Lawyer. He was generous with his time and advise to many of us and by his example taught me and many others the value of showing respect and consideration in all aspects of the practice of law and life. When he appeared in my Court it was always a treat. Ron Pearson

Mr. DiTrapano was a fine man, a family friend, a generous and caring soul and great friend of my father Sam Harshbarger, and always kind to me. I am so sad to hear of his death, but I know that he gave so much of himself to this community and that his family and friends will cherish his memory always. May light perpetual shine upon him.

Mr. DiTrapano.. on many occasions would stop by my work area and always had a good and funny story to tell me...He would also help me with my learning the Italian Language...often reminding me the proper way to say my "own name".. He was a friend of one of my brothers....
He was always concerned about how I was doing...
and upon a minute or two of concentration...
said... "I will pray for you"..(with a lot of humor intended )...
God love you and take you home Mr. T!!!

Dear Martha, Luisa, Dante', Lia, Gian, and Evelyn;
Rudy was very good to me when I worked for him during my college breaks. He told me things about my dad and grandfather I had never heard before and that made me proud. I respected and admired Rudy. The entire DiTrapano family is in my thoughts and prayers.

I am saddened to learn of Mr. DiTrapano's passing. My sincere condolences to Mrs. DiTrapano and family. Some of my fondest memories are of working for him and his father when they made
wine. Both were very kind and thoughtful towards me and they were a joy to be around.

What a brilliant gentleman was your father. I am sorry for your loss. WV owes him a big thank you.

My own father was honored to join the Italian Club at KCC for breakfast on Saturdays with your dad, Mike Paterno, and Fred Sclavi. All three were uniquely talented men and American success stories.

My heart sank this morning when my mother called me to give me the news of Rudy's passing. I worked for him for six years and I am thankful to have known him. He was a very generous man who would help you any way he could. I learned a lot from him and the lawyers who worked with him. He gave me career opportunities that some employers would not. He will always hold a special place in my heart. You will be greatly missed.

Everyone who spent 5 minutes with Rudy has a story to tell. He & my Dad became friends with Democratic politics, and I was proud to be associated with him & the law firm - and of course have stories as a result. One oft-repeated in appropriate settings: "I am not a pilgrim. I was not an early settler. Get ready for the trial."

The meals, marinara sauce, olive oil, wine, coffee (no paper cups please), daily dark chocolate, and jovial laughs in heaven just stepped up a notch. God's speed my friend. I'm forever thankful for Rudy's launching my career as a Forensic Accountant. I'll let others share those amazing stories because they are endless and often considered fiction, but I know better because I was a first hand witness to this gentle bulldog fulfilling his professional duty to be an advocate for his client. Rest in Peace my Brother in Christ and may God comfort you all.

Sad I will miss the funeral to fulfill my duties at the annual Board of Trustees meeting of Boys Home Orphanage in Virginia, a concept of giving back that Rudy taught me with his endless service to others. Rest in Peace my Brother in Christ and may God comfort The Family.

I worked for Rudy as his secretary/paralegal for 16 yeas. He was the most generous and witty man I had the pleasure of knowing. I can't say one bad thing about him. I enjoyed our working relationship and have thought of him often after moving to the beach and tried to visit him at the office when I was in town. He will be missed by a lot of people. I'm truly sad for his passing.
