Ryan "Scuttle" Lloyd was born in Annapolis, Maryland on June 11, 1974. A gentle child with a sweet demeanor, his boundless energy kept him very active and he was known to bounce on his pogo stick for hours. With a great curiosity and a generous spirit, his natural aptitude for mechanics and technology led him on many adventures beyond his early days with his family in Utah.
Everywhere Ryan went, he cultivated lasting and true friendships. From the #mindvox channel of IRC – Internet Relay Chat (an offshoot of the pioneering virtual community MindVox), to the Portland bars where he provided maintenance services and camaraderie, Ryan both collected and shared stories of his life, which included times he worked on fishing vessels in the Bering Sea to that time he served as ship engineer for the Sultan of Brunei. One of his favorite stories though, was when he met his daughter Shelby and her adoptive parents in 2007, forever expanding the family and providing an ongoing source of joy in his life.
A resident of Portland, Oregon since 1992, Ryan was the person many small businesses and friends counted on. From refurbishing vintage bar lights and building patio structures, to replacing broken windows or designing and manufacturing from scratch that one tiny part for a custom cabinet that just didn't exist in any hardware store, Ryan always showed up to lend a hand, and if you needed a tool, he almost certainly had it in his truck.
Ryan loved motorcycles, pie, and tinkering with electronics. His smile and his hug was warm, his hair was fabulous, and his sense of humor regularly poked fun at the things that were breaking his heart.
Ryan always rooted for the underdog, and was protective of friends and strangers alike when he witnessed injustice of any kind. He was seen as a mentor/big brother/uncle for many younger people who were missing that in their families. And he was truly beloved by his own family.
Ryan's body died at home in Portland, Oregon at age 51 on July 1, 2025 while attempting to recover from a hospitalization for sepsis and pneumonia.
He was predeceased by his wife, Tara McDowell, his beloved dog Annie, and many other loved ones.
Ryan is survived by his mother, Sondra "Sonni" Lloyd (nee Yelton), his daughter Shelby Page and her wife Olivia Burke; siblings David Lloyd, Michael Lloyd, Shannon Ngai (nee Lloyd), and Erin Lloyd, and their spouses and partners; several nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and his extended chosen family, who were all important to Ryan and far too numerous to name.
A gathering for friends to celebrate Ryan's life will be held at The Hungry Tiger (213 SE 12th Ave., Portland) on August 23, 2025 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Afterwards, The Nest (2715 SE Belmont St., Portland) will be open to host friends who want to continue to gather in remembrance. A small private gathering will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah at a later date for out-of-town family.
