SALVADOR JOSE "CHICHO" JUNCADELLA, ESQ.

March 16, 1929 - July 29th, 2023

Salvador Jose "Chicho" Juncadella Gamba, Esq., 94, resident of Miami, Florida passed away peacefully after a sudden illness on Saturday 29th of July 2023, surrounded by loved ones and having received the Sacrament of Last Rites and Anointing of the Sick. He is survived by his wife Mercy Diaz Miranda Juncadella, his children Salvador J. Juncadella III (Patricia Sanchez), Jose Ignacio Juncadella (Maria Gongora), F. Javier Juncadella (Tere Blanca), Marite Vanegas (Luis Vanegas d. 2023), Mariano (Maria Fernanda Cardenal), and Jose Ricardo (Liliam Fox), the Miranda-Diaz family Jose Antonio Miranda (Sarah Isabelle Oliver), Paloma Miranda, Cristina Miranda, Javier A. Miranda (Arlene Suarez), Mary Ann Miranda, Maria Elena Miranda (Albert Sotolongo), grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Salvador, who was lovingly known as "Chicho," was a very accomplished lawyer with a career spanning over 60 years. Born in Havana Cuba on the 16th of March 1929 to Salvador J Juncadella I and Estela Gamba, he studied at Belen Jesuit School, graduating in 1947 and becoming the 1st Brigadier of the elite school, exemplary of his academic, personal, and Christian values. He was accepted at the University of Havana Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1952, with Honors. Upon graduation he earned a position at the prestigious law firm Bufete Mendoza in Havana. He married in 1952 to the late Josefina Sampedro (d. 2008) with whom he shared six children. In 1962, fleeing communist Cuba for the United States, he continued his career as a Civil Lawyer specializing in International Law for ExxonMobil InterAmerican in Coral Gables, FL. Two years later, he was transferred to Costa Rica to head the legal division as Director of Legal Matters where he worked and lived for 10 years. In 1974, he was promoted to Legal Director and was transferred to El Salvador where he lived for five years. In 1979, after several years of a lucrative career in Latin America, he was appointed General Counsel for ExxonMobil Latin America and returned to the United States.

After retiring from ExxonMobil, in 1992 he joined the global law firm of Morgan Lewis Bockius, LLP as an International Law Consultant due to his extensive knowledge and relationships in the Latin American hemisphere. His contributions to the firm in his later years earned him the respect and accolades of his colleagues throughout the world, and he continued to work until a few months before his 90th birthday.

Salvador re-married in 2010 to community pillar Mercy Diaz Miranda, former Assistant Director of Community Relations for the Miami Herald. Sharing his values in faith, family and community, their marriage resulted in a blended family with her children becoming part of his daily life. The Miranda-Diaz children Jose Antonio Miranda (Isabelle Oliver), Paloma Maria Miranda, Cristina Miranda, Javier A. Miranda (Arlene Suarez), Mary Ann Miranda, Maria Elena Miranda (Albert Sotolongo) have been an integral part of the Juncadella-Miranda family and together with their children were able to share in their daily lives. Later in life, his wife Mercy introduced him to a new world of film spanning decades, to new experiences in her beloved greater Miami community, and in traversing the twilight years together, coupled with the adventures of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Salvador had an enormous impact in the field of International Law, specifically corporate counsel, spanning six decades. Known as the "father of the in-house counsel movement in Latin America, he accomplished in his lifetime what would take many two to three careers to achieve. Among his most notable career highlights were:

- President of InterAmerican Bar Association 1997-1998

- Lawyer of the Americas - Named by the University of Miami, 1998

- Honorary Member of the Lima, Peru Bar Association, 1998

- Vice President of the Argentine-Florida Chamber of Commerce

- Board of Directors, Commercial Dispute Resolution, Center of the Americas

- Chair, South Florida Group of Regional Counsel of Multinational Corporations

- Panel of International Arbitrators, International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) and International Division of American Arbitration (IAAA)

- Advisory Board, Tulane Latin American Law Institute, Tulane Law School

- Founder of the Juncadella Corporate Counsel Group (JCCG) University of Miami, 1992

- Recipient of the LACCA (Latin American Corporate Counsel Association) Lifetime Achievement Award, 2018

Salvador was a devout Catholic and great supporter of his beloved Alma Mater, Belen Jesuit School where many of his family members attended, following in his footsteps. He was part of the Agrupacion Catolica Universitaria (ACU), A Marian Congregation whose spirituality is based on Jesuit formation principles and a strong concentration on Marian Reflection. Whilst serious and focused, he had a quick wit and ability to seize every opportunity to speak and advocate for any issue that was worth fighting for. As the patriarch of the family, his greatest legacy was his role of father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and mentor to many. His love for everything Belen included a wardrobe of Alma Mater gear which he wore faithfully, to the typical lawyer Brooks Brothers everything attire. Whether he was wearing his JCCG or Belen baseball caps, they were always coupled with a BB suit, or a jacket of some sort. It took a couple of years after retirement to finally let go of the daily suit and tie, and his beloved (fifth) Volvo S60. What he never lost was his appetite for anything chocolate.

"Chicho" could argue the value of 2 Hershey chocolate kisses daily (was more like 4 or 6) like he would have argued a major legal case before the Cuban Supreme Court in all its glory and would cite book and verse from the "Brothers Mayo" related to the benefits of chocolate to his health. There was not a meal where he would caution us that he really did not eat much, but it was strategic to leaving enough room to have dessert; the mandatory Key Lime Pie, Flan, or anything Chocolate, occasionally accompanied by (Microwaved) ice cream to ensure it was slightly melted. In the face of his favorite meals - anything from broiled Chilean Sea Bass to a McChicken and an ice cream sundae from McDonalds, the chocolate kisses would win hands down. In his later years, his palate was not as varied as in his attorney days, the Monday through Friday Tuna fish sandwich from Grunberg's Deli, or business lunches at the firm or with clients. But the love for anything chocolate has never swayed.

Chicho and Mercy lived in the Darlington Manor Estates area of Miami since they wed, staying close to their families and their community. Although Chicho battled some health challenges, he surpassed all expectations and was a cancer survivor. He supported many causes including supporting the Autism Spectrum community as evidenced by his support for each year's Light it Up Blue, St. Timothy's Catholic Church, and his Alma Mater Belen. He was passionate about his children and grandchildren's accomplishments, their educational and business success, and was fiercely proud of all of them. He was especially happy about the next generation, boasting of eleven great-grandchildren and was thrilled to learn that there were three more great grandchildren on the way.

Chicho is also survived by his grandchildren Alexandra Juncadella Cuesta, Andrea Juncadella Martinez, Camila Juncadella, Carolina Juncadella, Daniella Juncadella, Diego Juncadella, Eduardo Vanegas, Felipe Juncadella, Fernando Juncadella, Gabriela Juncadella Herbert, Gabriella Ulloa, Ignacio Meyer, Isabella Ulloa, Laura Juncadella, Marcela Juncadella Flammang, Natalia Juncadella Verdeja, Salvador J. Juncadella IV, Sebastian Juncadella and Sofia Juncadella Ruzo, and also Miranda-family Jennifer Miranda Stout, Joseph A. Miranda III, Katherine Mary Miranda, Hanna Sotolongo-Miranda, Hope Sotolongo-Miranda, Marina M. Miranda and Meagan Bouscher-Miranda, eleven great grand-children, and the extended Sampedro, Valdes-Fauli and Mas families. Loved by many and will be incredibly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. May be rest in Peace.

Such a gentleman in every respect. I met Sal in 1991 and always have held him in high regard and esteem. May his memory be a blessing and comfort his family.
