Shirley Powers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2025.
Shirley McKinney Powers, 97, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Plantation, Florida. Born on January 22, 1928, in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, Shirley lived a vibrant and purposeful life marked by her dedication to education, her love of the arts, and her spirited personality.

A lifelong learner and educator, Shirley earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminster College in Wilmington, Pennsylvania. She went on to receive a Master's of Education from the University of Pittsburgh and pursued doctoral studies at Stetson University in Orlando, Florida. Her teaching career began in Pittsburgh in 1953 and continued after the family moved to Florida in 1966, spanning more than fifty years.

She taught English and drama with enthusiasm and insight and also served as a guidance counselor. Her influence touched generations of students who benefited from her knowledge and unwavering commitment to their growth.

Shirley's zest for life extended far beyond the classroom. She was an avid dancer-who often professed to like dancing more than eating-and even taught at Arthur Murray dance studios. A bridge player and devoted theatre-goer, she found joy in both intellectual pursuits and artistic expression. Later in life she embraced travel, fulfilling her dreams of seeing the Sistine Chapel, visiting Israel, and kissing the Blarney Stone.

She was known for her outgoing nature, strong will, and a unique brand of logic that made her unforgettable to those around her.

Deeply devoted to her family, Shirley was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Walter R. Powers, Jr.. She is survived by her daughter Dawn Keller (David); son Walter R. Powers III (Diana); son Marc Powers (Gina); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and Ret, her beloved poodle.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at Covenant Living in Plantation, Florida on Sunday, May 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Shirley Powers to The Pet Cottage (thepetcottage.com), where Ret has found his loving new home.

May Shirley's memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to uplift and inspire those whose lives she touched.

Mrs Powers was my English teacher at Piper High in 1973. She pushed me into the debate club. Best thing I ever did. I became a teacher years later (recently retired after 45 years). I always wondered about her and thought of her often. She was an amazing person and teacher. Rest in paradise. Thank you for the gift you imparted on me.

For over five years, I had the privilege of caring for Shirley-not just as her home health aide, but as someone who grew to deeply admire and love her. Shirley was more than a patient; she became a cherished part of my life, like family.

Her strength, humor, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Through every conversation, quiet moment, and shared routine, Shirley taught me the true meaning of grace and resilience.

I will miss her stories, her smile, and the light she brought into each day. Though she is no longer with us, her memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Rest in peace, Shirley. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. You will always be remembered.

With love,
Dawn
