Shirley Herbert Goedike Jr passed away peacefully at home, in Fallbrook Ca, on November 17th, 2023. He was 100 years old.

Shirl was born in Los Angeles in 1923 to Ruby and Shirley Herbert Goedike. He grew up In the Mid-Wilshire area, attended John Burrows Junior High and graduated from LA High School.

At age 5 he was given a toy bugle at a neighbor's birthday party. When he was 7 years old his parents signed him up to be in a children's band where he got a real trumpet and his formal music instruction began. By the time he was at LA High he had mastered the trumpet, became the leader of his own band and was lauded as a musical prodigy. Shirl went on to study music at USC as an undergraduate in 1941 to 1943.

As a WWII enlistee in 1943 he was recognized for his musical achievements - he entertained the troops and played on the Army radio station.

After the War, he continued his musical training at UCLA from 1947 to 1949. During that time Shirl played, conducted and scored movies for Columbia Records and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. He recorded music with singers including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore and Sami Davis, Jr. and played in the bands of Ozzie Nelson, Stan Kenton, Ray Noble and David Rose.

In the 1950's Shril shifted his passion to visual art. Enrolling at LA Art Center; he spent the rest of his life as a painter. He was represented at numerous galleries including The Ester Robles Gallery and The Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, Hammer, Coe Kerr and Adelson Galleries in NYC, Didier Imbert Fine Art in Paris.

After numerous visits to France, he settled in St Paul de Vence in the 1960's. His patrons included Princess Caroline of Monaco who sponsored a show in Monte Carlo, King Hussein of Jordan who commissioned works from him and President Mitterrand of France who held a solo exhibition of Shirl's work in the Palais Elysee where his works are still part of the French National Collection.

In the mid 90's Shirl relocated back to California, ultimately settling in Fallbrook where he continued to paint for the remainder of his life. A lifelong Disney fan, he celebrated his 100th birthday at the Magic Kingdom.

Shirl is preceded in death by his first wife Susan Carpenter, his second wife Mary Goedike, daughter Ellen Goedike and son Tripp Goedike. He is survived by his daughters Glenn Mellinger and Cathie Waring and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and loving care givers.
