Shirley Williamson Alford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2025.
Shirley Williamson Alford, affectionately known as "Charlie" to her friends and "Nanny" to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, in Centreville, Alabama, at the age of 88.

Born on February 9, 1937, in Mount Olive, South Carolina, Shirley lived a life deeply rooted in faith and love. A devout woman who cherished the word of God, she was rarely seen without her Bible and a warm cup of coffee by her side. Her unwavering belief guided every step of her journey and served as a beacon for those around her.

Shirley was the embodiment of unconditional love-kind-hearted, deeply compassionate, and always ready with a listening ear. Whether offering comfort during difficult times or sharing a laugh with those close to her, she had a unique ability to make others feel seen and valued. Her presence brought peace and strength to many, and her legacy will continue through the lives she touched so profoundly.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Patrice Bailey and Frances "Muffin" Sanchez; her brother Sonny; granddaughter Tiffany and her children; grandsons Channon and Anthony and their children. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joseph Alford, her son Tony, and her sisters Geraldine and Betty.

Though she has departed this world, Shirley's spirit remains ever-present in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. The love she gave so freely will continue to ripple outward-a lasting testament to a life well-lived in grace and devotion.

May her memory bring comfort to all who were blessed to know her.

Nanny was surely an amazing woman. I will never forget all the summers spent staying with her and papa Joe. Cooking the most delicious meals and baking all the goodies. She was a wonderful great grandmother and I am glad I have wonderful memories filled with her.

The heavens have welcomed home a bright and shining star, and while she is missed by so many here, she will live on in the hearts and memories of those she left behind. The memory of a loved one is never lost... it carries on through the lives they have touched. Prayers and Love.

To Patrice and Frances and entire family. I loved your mom and family. When my family moved to Loris SC in 1963, back to my mother's home place, your family lived across the street. You became my first friends in a town I didn't want to be in.I had left all my friends in Newport News VA at 11 years old and was the new kid on the block.Your family made me so welcomed and I finally realized a little town like Loris wasn't so bad. All of Shirley's children played with me and made me feel welcome. I watched Shirley's children grow up and eventually moved on with their own lives and we lost contact. Finally found sweet Patrice on Facebook and she had grown up to become a beautiful young lady but her sweet loving personality always remained the same. I never saw Shirley again but Patrice kept telling me about her mother's health issues and it broke my heart. She was always a mom doing things for her young family, and loving them with her whole heart. My heart breaks for Shirley's family, I feel their pain. I lost my mom in 1978 and still miss her everyday. My thoughts, love and prayers will be continued for them for a long time, but rest easy in knowing your mom is still looking after you, from heaven. You will see her again when it's your turn . Again, I'm sorry to hear this family has lost her, but only until our life here on earth ends for ourself.

Nanny was the absolute best grandmother anyone could ever ask for in the entire world. There aren't words to describe how much she could make a person feel loved, safe, and supported, and she would always be there for you, no matter what you might have going on. She was an amazing grandmother and a wonderful great-grandmother, from tolerating my brother and me as wild-animal children throwing each other across her living room and pretending we were pro wrestlers to being just as kind and loving to my own children as she was to us. There's a place in my heart, and I'm sure the same goes for anyone else who was ever close to her, that can never be filled with her passing, as no one will ever compare to the type of person she was. I don't think I've ever laughed with another person in my entire life as much as I always laughed with her, and she was always the best person to call if you were feeling down or just needed to stop by and feel like you're "at home" for a while. She was the one person I could call up any day of the week, swing by to pick her up, and we could just drive anywhere and even hop state lines just because "Why not?" Six hours of driving just to go grab a REALLY good sandwich and hang out because we had nothing else to do? Absolutely. Wanna take a weekend trip to go play putt-putt and see the mountains? Always yes. Wanna go see a sci-fi movie you're absolutely not interested in but I wanna see it like ten times and don't wanna go alone? Yep, she was down for that, too. The only thing making her passing easier is knowing that she'll finally feel like herself again, be out of the pain and discomfort that was setting in as her body was giving out, and finally get to see Joe, Tony, and the rest of her family members that went before her because I know how much she's missed them. But she'll be missed here, too. Every single day. Because she was the absolute best.
