Sonya Hitchcock, 84, of Peckville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday at Mid-Valley Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, who she was married to for 58 years.
Born in Jermyn on June 9, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Cora Bensing Kuzmick. She was a graduate of Jermyn High School, class of 1954 and a graduate of Scranton Lackawanna College. After college she worked for many years at the Jermyn Bank and then worked briefly with Dr. John Holmes in Jermyn as a secretary. For 26 years before retirement, she worked as a podiatrist's assistant with Dr. Joseph Schectman in Blakely. Sonya enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her cat, whom she affectionately called "Pretty Kitty," spent hours by her side. She was loved by all that knew her and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her sons, John and wife, Cathy, Mayfield, James and wife, Christina, Madison Twp., and Thomas and wife, Amy, Endicott, N.Y.; two grandsons, John Paul and Joey; three granddaughters, Brittani, Allison and Jillian; three great-grandchildren; brother, Robert and Corinne Kuzmick, Jermyn; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mid-Valley Health Care Center for their excellent care and kindness shown to her in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonya's memory may be made to Mid-Valley Health Care Center's resident activities fund.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from St. John's Russian Orthodox Cathedral by the Very Rev. Mitred Archpriest John Sorochka. A viewing will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Battenberg Funeral Home, 363 Washington Ave., Jermyn. Parastas will be at 6 and transferal at 7. Interment, St. John's Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Mayfield.
