Steven Goeggelman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2022.
Steven Philip Goeggelman, 70, passed away on October 16, 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Steve was born on December 26, 1951, to Ruth and Donald Goeggelman in Rochester, New York. He graduated from Charlotte High School in Rochester, NY in 1969 where he played Varsity baseball for 3 years. He went on to earn his Associates Degree in Accounting from SUNY Delhi (NY) in 1971. Steve was a member of the Delta Theta Gamma fraternity where he met many of his lifelong friends.

After graduation, Steve worked for Arthur Andersen Accounting Firm in Rochester and then Boulter Moving Company until his move to Houston in 1977. In Houston, Steve worked construction during the building boom of the 70s and early 80s until entering his 29-year career with Spring Branch ISD. Upon retiring from Spring Branch in 2006, Steve followed his passion for gardening to a job with Buchanan's Native Plants where he worked until recently, when he needed time off to focus on his health.

His job at Spring Branch is where he met the love of his life, Judy Baird. They were married in 2003 and he immediately gained a family of stepchildren and grandchildren who welcomed and loved him. He was affectionately known as "Pawpaw" to the grandchildren, to whom he was always an attentive playmate. He fit within this family as if he had always been here and enjoyed many years of travel, beach vacations and holiday gatherings.

Steve loved baseball and played on several local slow-pitch teams in the Rochester area. His love for baseball never died as he continued to play softball and then Men's Senior Baseball in Houston. He eventually found a passion for golf, which he played until a month before his passing. Golf served as the perfect reason for regular trips with good friends.

In addition to baseball and golf, Steve had a passion for gardening, music, watching sports, but most of all for friends and family. He was a die-hard NY Yankees fan until his move to Houston, where he was converted into an Astro's fan. His family and friends in NY don't hold that against him. His loss will be felt by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife Judy; stepchildren Lori Baird, Melissa (Eric) Clifford, Tiffany (FJ) Merenda, April (Brian) Franzman, and Colby Baird; grandchildren Lindsey Ketterer, Jordan Clifford, Jocelyn Clifford, Bailey Eaton, Mason Merenda, Brynne Eaton, Tyler Merenda, Blakeley Merenda and Otis Franzman; brother Paul (Laurie) Goeggelman; sister-in-law Susan Gallier; nieces and nephews Hannah (John) Olearnick, Corey (Nicole) Goeggelman, Callie Gallier, Cassi (Mike) Thompson, Mattie (Brent) Louviere, Declan Thompson, Ryder Thompson and Brooks Louviere; and numerous friends and co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ruth and Donald Goeggelman.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Memorial Church of Christ, 900 Echo Ln in Houston, TX. A reception at the home he shared with his wife Judy will immediately follow.

So sorry to hear this news.
I knew Goeggs in college at Delhi.
We used to play solfball on Sunday afternoon's. Steve was a very good 3rd baseman. We used to drink beer during the game. The more we drank, the more incredible plays he made.
He was loved by all.

Judy, Paul and families:
Steve was such a special person to many. He will be missed.

Your song will not end. The kindness you have shown. The wisdom you have shared. The love you have given. None of that will end. It will go on and on, passed like an heirloom of faith from person to person, not only of your own family, but between the countless others you have known, cared for, worked with, prayed for and respected. You have made music with your life. You have made a witness. The harmony you have embodied and the hope you have embraced will sing on after you, sing on into generations yet to come. Your vision will live in many hearts until one joyous day it joins the chorus of life that began when Spirit first started to sing.

I knew Steve since the 1st grade but it wasn't until junior high school that we became fast friends. Steve and I were the smallest kids in our class but the difference between us was that Goeggs had the courage of a lion. Back in those days size meant everything and it was less than a week in a new school (Charlotte Junior, Senior High) and I was targeted by the school bully. School had ended for the day and I was headed to the bus stop when a giant of a kid grabbed me by the collar and started shaking me like a rag doll, demanding I give him my bus fare. The next thing I knew, i was on the ground with a ripped shirt and there was Goeggs, standing between me and the giant like an immovable hunk of granite, facing down the bully who was cuppng his left ear and trying to hold back tears. I never knew if Goeggs hit that kid because there were a few other kids who had come and stood with him but it was he who said two words to the bully and ended the show down. He said, "get lost" and that's exactly what the kid did. From that day forward, I knew I had a friend in Goeggs and i learned a valuable lesson. I learned that size is nothing compared to moxy and courage and Goeggs had both in spades.
