Susan Bleier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2024.
Susan (Zsuzsi) Bleier passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones one month short of her 90th birthday. Though small in stature, she was a spark plug with a sharp tongue who never sugarcoated the truth. She was also full of laughs and smiles and radiated loving kindness to those she cared for. This love was born from hardship: as a child in Hungary, Susan survived the Holocaust while much of her family perished, including her father. She later immigrated to Israel, then America, in search of a better life. She spent her career as a nurse, including Bethesda Hospital and as head nurse at Evanston's Presbyterian Home. Susan was wife to the late Andrew (Bandi) Bleier and is survived by her two sons, Daniel (Caroline Glasser) and Michael (Emily Tower), her six grandchildren, Elie (Hanna), Anna (Jesse), Ben, Rebecca, Isabella & Sophia, one great grandchild (Ziggy) with two more on the way, her longtime caring partner, Barry Schimmel and her devoted dog, Mushy. Private graveside service and shiva. All donations to Yad V'hashem, Har Hazikaron, P.O.B. 3477, Jerusalem 9103401 Israel www.yadvashem.org are appreciated. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals - Skokie Chapel, 847.229.8822, www.cjfinfo.com

Deepest sympathy to all family and friends. I remember her fondly when we were raising our sons together, Danny and Jamie, in Hollywood Park.

As a young nurse, I used to work with Susan some 30 years ago when she was in charge at the Presbyterian Homes. She was a caring and compassionate nurse both toward the patients and her staff. She also had the most realistic view of life and death that I have ever seen. She never let people suffer and made sure they had the meds they needed to be comfortable. I learned a lot from her that I still carry with me as I age myself.

My condolences to her family and loved ones.
