Susan L. Pilkington, formerly Hayes, a long-time resident of Portland, died May 20, 2017.
Susan was born in 1947 in Ashland and grew up in Eagle Point. She moved with her family to Alaska and graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1965. Shortly after graduation, she married and moved to Pullman, Wash., where she worked as a nurse's aide at Pullman Memorial Hospital. In 1971, she moved with her young family to Portland and was a homemaker. In 1982, she began working in the Displaced Homemakers program at Portland Community College and later in its Careers Department in Student Job Placement, which she enjoyed until 1999.
Susan was very proud to be an Oregonian and loved reading and learning about its history and how her own ancestry contributed to it. In addition to being an avid reader, she enjoyed going to the movies, watching old movies and taking trips to the Oregon Coast. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and a laugh and smile that could brighten up any room.
Susan is loved, missed and survived by her daughter, Karilyn Pilkington of Portland; her sister, Katherine Gage of Eagle River, Alaska; her brother, Steven Hayes of Anchorage, Alaska; her niece, Anna Gage and her nephew, James Gage, both of Anchorage, Alaska; her niece, Rheta Nichol of Kennewick, Wash.; her aunt and uncle, Bette and Al Hayes of Lake Oswego; and many cousins residing in Oregon and in Northern California.
As an alternative to a memorial service, Susan requested that donations be made in her name to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, The United States Holocaust Museum or a charity that is near and dear to your heart.
