Sylvia Ruiz Lafferty

Sylvia R. Lafferty, of Tuscon, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2024, at age 75. Born in Tuscon on November 8, 1948, Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents Albert Lafferty and Rafaela Villanueva Ruiz. Sylvia attended Rincon High, then studied at the University of Arizona, where she earned her BFA, MA, and JD.

For over 20 years Sylvia was Deputy Pinal County Attorney, Chief Trial Counsel. A smart and tenacious prosecutor, she handled child abuse, adult sexual assault, and homicide cases. Together with fellow Deputy Pinal County Attorney Richard Platt, Sylvia successfully prosecuted the murder-for-hire of Dr. Brian Stidham. Court TV and other media covered this infamous Stidham case, which was featured on the CBS program "48 Hours-Mystery." For her work on this complicated case, the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys' Advisory Council named Sylvia a "Felony Prosecutor of the Year," and the National District Attorneys Association presented her its highest honor.

Sylvia later served as Judge Pro Tem at Pinal County Superior Court, as well as Pro Tem Special City Magistrate at Tucson City Court. She also participated as a group leader and trainer for the National District Attorneys Association. Over 14 years, she covered topics such as ethics, opening statements, and a view from the bench.

Sylvia loved traveling, going to the theatre, making tamales for Christmas with friends, and hanging in the backyard with Mary and their dogs Charly and Cadbury. Sylvia leaves behind her beloved partner, Mary P. Duncan of Tuscon, as well as treasured friends and respected colleagues. She will be missed.
