TERUKO SHIONO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 10 to Mar. 12, 2013.
SHIONO TERUKO (UTAGAWA)
84, died on February 23, 2013 in Edgewater, NJ, after a prolonged illness. A long-time resident of Pittsburgh, PA, she is survived by three children, Chizu Shiono (Ronn Beck), Masako Shiono (Hyun-soo Lee), and Ryoichi Shiono (Erin); six grandchildren, Megumi, Jaeho, and Kenjiro Lee, and Delaney, Tate, and Brock Shiono; three nieces and two nephews in Japan; and predeceased by her daughter, Hiromi, and husband of 55 years, Dr. Ryonosuke Shiono, who passed away in December. Born in Tokyo and raised in Kyoto, Mrs. Shiono received the Kyoto Prefecture Governor's Award upon graduating from Kouka Women's School. An accomplished artist and music lover, she was a model, calligrapher, and flower arranger, and attended dress making school. In 1958, she married Ryonosuke Shiono, Associate Professor of Crystallography at the University of Pittsburgh, and emigrated to the U.S. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Shiono was an active member of the University of Pittsburgh Women's Association, a volunteer for the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors, and was an early leader in city's Japanese community. She and her husband helped to establish the Japan Association of Greater Pittsburgh and served on the board of the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Committee of the Federal Executive Board. They were instrumental in the creation of the Japanese Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh and endowed the Dr. Ryonosuke and Teruko Shiono Summer Travel Scholarship for student research in Asia. In 1985, she appeared on "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood," demonstrating the art of origami and was an extra in the 1993 film, "Lorenzo's Oil." Mrs. Shiono was honored by Newsweek magazine in 1995 as an "everyday hero" and served as a translator at the memorial service for United Flight 93 which crashed outside Pittsburgh on 9/11. She achieved the rank of Professor First Grade in the Ikenobo school of Japanese floral art. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Mrs. Shiono to "The University of Pittsburgh," (Ryonosuke and Teruko Shiono Summer Travel Scholarship), Office of Institutional Advancement, 128 N. Craig Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15260 or online at www.giveto.pitt.edu. You may also donate to a fund of your choice in memory of Mrs. Shiono. A service to celebrate the life of Ryonosuke and Teruko Shiono will be planned at a later date.

Dear Chizu, Masako, and Ryoichi, Your mom was a fantastic individual full of life, a caring spirit, and kind heart. She will be greatly missed. I still have the fondest memories of you and your mom at Carnegie Library. She always brought me watercress or cucumbler sandwiches. Seems like such a small gesture, but it showed how kind and generous your mom was to everyone she came into contact with! May you comforted in the days ahead with wonderful memories of your mom. Much love, Florence Fong

Teruko was a Women's Association member long before I came to Pittsburgh and took the role of the Association to welcome newcomers to heart. She especially watched out for the wives coming for Japan, even those just staying for a short one-year assignment. She has not been active in the Association since health has prevented it, but participated in many activities over the years. She was always friendly to everyone and helped in any way she could, including making origami favors for functions.

Teruko was one of the first persons I met when I became Nationality Rooms Program Director in 1965. I recall her dressing me in a traditional Japanese kimono for a Post-Gazette publicity photo in 1966. Teruko could always be relied on to demonstrate origami to a children's group or at one of our many Nationality Rooms Open Houses.
The Shionos, as a couple, were an integral part of our Nationality Rooms Program and we are proud to administer the scholarship for summer study in Asia which he endowed a few years ago. They are deeply missed.

Our sincere condolence to the Shiono family for the loss of your Mother as well as your Dad. Your Mom was a delight. She would make origami gifts for our girls when they were young. She was always pleasant and greeted our family with a smile. May your hearts be comforted at this time with fond and proud memories of your distinguished parents. Neighbors,
