Thomas Zempel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2016.
Dr. Thomas L. Zempel very abruptly rested from his extensive and productive labors on April 24, 2016, in Cary, NC. His health was strong until the moment His Father called him home. Indeed, he had set out on his routine Sunday morning run, and he ran straight into the arms of Jesus. Tom was born on September 24, 1944, in Waupaca, WI to the late William Zempel and Gladys (Moran) Zempel. Raised on the farm, Tom never knew anything but hard work, rugged perseverance, and trusting God to give the harvest, and those habits of mind and body shaped all of his life and ministry.

Tom did his undergraduate work at Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, took his graduate degree from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, MN, and completed his doctorate in Biblical Counseling at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. Tom's 42 years of ministry included youth pastorates in Rockford, IL and then in Danville, IL; Professor of Bible and Counseling at his college alma mater; nearly ten years as senior pastor in Windsor Locks, CT; Vice President and Professor of Biblical Counseling at his seminary alma mater for 17 years. The past five years of Tom's ministry were invested as Counseling Pastor of Colonial Baptist Church and Professor of Biblical Counseling at Shepherds Theological Seminary in Cary, NC. He also served as an elder at the church and taught the Crossroads ABF class.

Tom was a marvelously effective teacher and mentor, an innovative and boldly adventurous thinker, a friend who could be counted on in every situation, a singularly devoted husband, father, and grandfather - but above and beneath all of that, he was a delightfully happy and committed follower of his Savior and Friend, Jesus Christ.

Tom is survived by his wife and soul-mate of 48+ years, Jane [Elliott]; son Jonathan (Renee), son Benjamin, and daughter Amy Hazard (Neil), and eight grandchildren: Sophia, Noah, Elise, and Megan Zempel; and Grant, Wesley, Ty, and Marley Hazard, as well as one foster grandbaby; his mother, Gladys Zempel; brothers Larry (Sharon) and Ronald (Lynn) Zempel; sisters Deborah Kottke and Jolene Gassen; brother-in-law Robert Elliott (Karen); sisters-in-law Ruth (David) Ihrig, LouAnn (Brian) Doolittle, and Terri Jo Quella; as well as 21 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Lorilie Felbinger.

A memorial service and celebration of Tom's life and ministry will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Colonial Baptist Church, 6051 Tryon Road, Cary, NC. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Church. Burial will be in Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shepherds Theological Seminary, 6051 Tryon Road, Cary, NC 27518.

Our hearts go out to you, Janie, and the rest of your family at this time. We watched the funeral live-stream and finished it now. Tom was truly a Godly man used of Him. He will be missed. May God bless you and yours in the future.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Tom Zempel. He was my roommate for one semester my freshman year at Pillsbury. Then, when I took my first church in the Danville, IL area, he was a youth pastor in Danville at Calvary Baptist. He was on my Ordination Council in 1977. After he left the Danville area, our paths only crossed a couple more times. I appreciate his faithfulness to the Lord throughout the years and know that Christ has already said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant." I assure the family of my prayers.

He taught me more in one year of coping Biblically with life than my entire 38 years of my Christian walk. He was an amazing man of God and will be truly missed. Many prayers to the family! God bless!

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Zempel's passing away. He is one of the most genuine Christians I have come across. His trademark friendliness, his outta this world kindness and love coupled with his gentle smile and caring words will stay with us forever!
Dr. Zempel will be fondly remembered and greatly missed!
Last time we met I was one of his guests at the Fogo de Chao in Minneapolis. I cannot wait to dine with him again at the Celestial Fogo de Chao, both of us guests of the Risen Christ!

I babysat the Zempel kids all through my junior high and high school years. I love this family! They were so kind and loving to me, and showed me a wonderful example of how a Christian family should work. My prayers are with them during this difficult time. All my love!

Dr. Zempel was not only my professor at Central Seminary, but grew to be a trusted friend and mentor. Our prayers are with Jane and family. He will be greatly missed by others, for he generously invested his life in the lives of so many. God give you all comfort and peace in great abundance.

We are so saddened for your loss. But we rejoice knowing Pastor Tom is safely home! Altho it has been many years now, Tom and Janie left a lasting influence on our lives as they served at Calvary Baptist Church in Danville, IL. Steve and I were among the young lives they served. We both faithfully serve at Calvary today. May God bless you with his presence and grace now and in the days to come. Love, Steve and Mickie Benson
