Tina Canales

October 9, 1965 - April 13, 2025

On April 13, 2025, at approximately 7:11pm our beloved Maria Cristina "Tina" Canales passed while in the UCLA Neurological Intensive Care Unit. She was surrounded by love from her family, but it was an unexpected, sudden, and abrupt end to the life of a beautiful woman.

Tina was a dedicated, supportive, and inspiring guiding light to her daughters: Natalie Onken Persico (Luke Persico), Isabella Onken, and Gabriella "Gigi" Onken.

She was half of an enviable 39-year love story with her husband, Greg Onken, and often held his hand whilst they slept "so that they wouldn't become separated."

She was a steadfast sister to her siblings: Marta Canales, Ana Canales (Bruce Streblow), James "Bucky" Canales (dec. Pamela Canales), Paul Canales (Mary Canales), and her deceased brother, Mark Canales (Pam Canales).

She was a devoted and dedicated daughter to her deceased parents, Dr. Jose Canales and Shirley Anne Hall Canales.

She was an ever-present, encouraging figure to her nieces, nephews, and godchildren, and an honorary "Aunt Tina" to a select group of "lucky ducks."

She had one granddaughter, Lilia Luisa Persico, and her grandchildren were going to call her "Lita."

She was the nuclear center and welcoming hostess to her immediate and extended family: all were welcome, be it for 30 minutes or 30 days.

She was a trusted confidant, advisor, and best of friends to a vast array of people because she provided unbiased, authentic, sound advice, could keep a secret, and had style.

She believed in service with and for others. Over the years, she was actively involved and supported multiple organizations focused on children's health, assisting the displaced, feeding the downtrodden, and education. Her operating motto was that "one can't go wrong protecting the innocent."

She had an accomplished career that included 12 years at "Mickey Drexler University" (aka The Gap), 10 years as co-founder and CEO of Peek...Aren't You Curious, and a stint as a senior vice president and general manager of Gymboree.

She valued creativity, anything done well, and beauty in any form.

She was not material but loved "stuff."

She was generous and was a standard-setting gift giver, believing that if one could give a gift that made someone feel better about themselves, then that person would be a better person.

She smelled like cookies in the morning.

She squeezed the toothpaste from the middle.

One of her best friends was a little boy dog called Diego.

Water brought her calm.

She appreciated an afternoon coffee and a morning tea.

She thought herself lucky, blessed, and fortunate - always expecting the parking spot up front.

She possessed a vast collection of inscribed children's books.

She loved a hardware store.

Her favorite sounds were chirping birds and laughing toddlers.

She disliked flying.

She could be subversive but never manipulative.

She was beautiful.

She found street art inspiring and habitually shared it.

She was fiercely loyal.

She once announced, "nuts and strawberries don't belong in salads."

She didn't like crass humor, preferring clever and witty. She was funny.

The Pantone Book of Colors was one of her cherished possessions.

She preferred English gardens.

She thought curiosity and kindness were two of the main ingredients in the making of a good human.

Her prized "Tina's tacos" were once mentioned in Vogue Magazine.

She collected things she wished she had said.

She saw magic.

She wasn't a very good driver, but had a perfect record.

She wanted to bring back the country club wedding.

She said her prayers every night.

She liked to sit on the floor.

To her, math was an intuitive process.

Christmas music, Nick Cave, INXS, opera, Stevie Wonder, "Elton," Amy Winehouse, and, of course, The Rolling Stones.

She was both fearless and vulnerable.

She always picked up the bill.

Her most-liked cities were London and Rome, but her favorite locations were poolside and home.

She disliked naps and "hit the ground running."

She called you back.

She never played pickleball but declared that had she, she "would have been good."

The Hallmark Channel was unabashedly her favorite TV pastime. "It is happy!"

She gave her children ice cream for breakfast on their birthdays.

She once ventured solo to Africa for safari.

She made people feel seen and important.

She didn't own much red clothing.

She gifted countless sets of fancy pajamas and lounged in bespoke pj's, but usually slept in oversized, giveaway, graphic tees.

She thought certainty was the eighth deadly sin.

The last words she spoke individually to each of her daughters and her husband were "I love you."

The last words she said to her doctors in the neurological ICU were "thank you."

Our world seems like a lesser place without her and is a better place because of her. She is loved because she loved. She was kind, and so should we be.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, May 30th, 2025, at 11:00 am in the St. Helena Catholic Church, 1340 Tainter St, St Helena, CA 94574. Reception to follow.

For those who have asked what they can do to show love for Tina, the family has chosen St. Jude because of the good work they do for pediatric cancer patients. http://fundraising.stjude.org/goto/tinacanales

Tina was the most lovely, generous, joyful, kind woman. I had the privilege of working on Via De La Paz which was right next to their home in the Pacific Palisades. I would see Tina in the neighborhood often as she would be walking past my office down to the bluff or for a delicious meal in the village. She always insisted on treating me. She was so full of God´s love and joy, it overflowed. I can see Tina´s beautiful smile and hear her laugh. She loved her family more than anything and served them so well. She was so confident, wise, intelligent and yet so humble. She always gave me the best advice and was a mentor in my career. There are so many questions I wish I could ask her today. I miss her dearly, think about her often and will always have the best memories of her. She is truly one of the most amazing people and I am honored to have known her well. She has made a huge impact in my life and I will forever be grateful for her. I love you Onken family!

I am deeply sorry that I will not be able to attend Tina´s memorial this weekend. My travel commitments make it particularly challenging, as I have to be at my little boy´s birthday. Please know, my heart and prayers are with you all during this time. Tina was truly unforgettable, and her memory will always be cherished.

With heartfelt condolences,

Tina and I just clicked... as though we´d been friends forever. We met through a collaborative project between our two brands many years ago and became fast friends. Over the years, long after the work had wrapped up, we would have early morning text chats, calls ... the occasional lunch. It was one of the purest, simplest, easiest friendships I´d known. Our connection over design, running companies, raising children, our love of Liberty of London fabrics and dreaming of what we would do next was deep. We saw many things the same way. There was an ease and simplicity to our connection. We enjoyed each other so much. Her passing has rocked me. My heart aches for Greg and her girls. I haven´t any photos of us together... I wish I did. I just have this of one of the rag dolls we designed together for the Peek.

I had the opportunity to work for Tina at Peek in the early days. She was all of the words written so beautifully in this obituary. I found her sitting on the floor of the office with fabric (often Liberty fabric) inspiration books and her Pantone book more times than I can count. We shared many intuitive math moments. She washed every dish in the office- nothing was dirty for long. Driving with her was interesting. Parking next to her even more interesting. She talked so lovingly of her girls. Her stories about home and big family life were funny and inspiring. I can hear her telling them now. She was intentional with her words and with her parenting. My oldest was born shortly before I started working for her and I still follow her parenting advice. Her generosity was boundless.
Sending so much light and love to the family and to friends.

I never met Tina, but I wished I had. The loving tribute you put in the S.F Chronicle painted a specific, loving and honorable description of what she meant to you and who she was. May it comfort all of you to know she continues to touch the lives of others, even strangers, since her passing. Thank you for sharing her with me, and so many others. God be with all of you. Lori

It´s probably been 40yrs since I met Tina through her brother James, who is still my treasured friend.
In reading the lovely remembrance of Tina she lived a life as beautiful, generous, fun-loving and thoughtful as I remembered her.
My heart goes out to her family and friends who will miss her tremendously but heaven must have been in need of an extraordinary angel!
I´ve included the Oatmeal/Choc Chip Cookie recipe that she´d make and to this day is my favorite!
The other photo is one I took of Lake Tahoe, where I live, which for me depicts heaven on earth..
May we All live our life like Tina lived hers
Big Hugs, Carolyn

I haven´t seen her in years, but I knew Tina when she was dating Greg in the early 90´s . There wasn´t anything or anyone she loved more. Hello,
I didn´t know Tina or your family, but this morning my 92-year-old grandmother came to me holding Tina´s obituary, which she had cut out of the LA Times. She said, "I have to save this one-I´ve never seen anything quite like it. It´s such a beautiful tribute." She asked me to read it, and I have to agree. By the end, I was choked up. It´s clear that Tina had a remarkable capacity to love and was deeply loved in return.

I´m so sorry for your loss. Though we never met her, Tina´s memory clearly lives on through the love and joy reflected in your words. Thank you for bringing a moment of light to my grandmother´s day, in a space that is often marked by sorrow. Your tribute touched us both.

Greg, my thoughts are with you and your family. I especially appreciate you reaching out to let me know about Tina's passing during your time of grief. In the short time I knew Tina, she was all you beautiful descriptions your family posted and more. She had a wonderfully kind spirit and was always thinking of her family. She wanted to be able to hold and snuggle her granddaughter more than anything, and we laughed about how much joy such a simple act could bring. She was fierce in her love for her family and I will miss her active mind. It was a pleasure being able to know her for even the short time I did, and I know she will be there in spirit with you all to help you through the difficult times ahead, because that is what she did in life. Much love, Sean.

My heart breaks to hear the news of Tina´s passing. I worked with Tina at the Gap for a number of years supporting her and her team. Her kindness, respect for others, and always making all feel welcomed and a part of the team I always admired. Tina was talented, compassionate and above all an inspirational leader. May her memory be a blessing and may we all take time to recognize how precious life is. I hope each of us takes a moment to pass along to others some of the acts of kindness Tina passed along to us! To Tina´s family... thank you for sharing Tina with us. I know for myself I learned so much from her.

Lesley and I really enjoyed Tina´s company at Pebble beach. It was our first time meeting her and she had an aura of warmth and friendliness about her that it felt like we were meeting an old friend. She was absolutely lovely company. She was such a beautiful and authentic person, inside and out. It´s a tremendous loss that we couldn´t spend any more time with her, everything was so sudden and shocking. Our deepest condolences about Tina´s passing. We will miss her.

Although I only had the privilege of a few hours in Tina´s presence, it was enough to leave a lasting memory of her kindness and caring soul. She clearly held a gift for making those around her feel special, effortlessly, which is evident in all the heartfelt words in this guest book, and not lost on someone she met only a couple of times.

I´m grateful to have helped reconnect the Onken´s with a special memory through art - it was a brief but meaningful moment that will also stay with me.

My heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved her.

My friend Tina,

What words are there to express the last 18 years. You allowed me into your beautiful world and for that I have been blessed with a friend, mentor, inspiration and confidante that most people are not gifted in this lifetime. Guess what! I still have that Pantone book mentioned in the tribute. And no matter how many Pantone books are at my disposal I always go to that blue one. I agree with you that strawberries DO NOT belong in salads. I miss our grey t-shirt era, our Iced Green Teas, our Rustic, our soups, our mangos and all of the things that at once seemed mundane but will forever hold a memory so special in my heart. I miss getting into pajamas with your hallmark movies, our lunches, in your kitchen nook, your dining table / work table, sitting on the floor with you, cutting swatches, and just being with you. There is no one funnier, kinder, more generous who loved just making people smile. I would have never imagined our text a few weeks ago would be the last. I would give the world for one more conversation with you. I hope I can be some small part of Greg, Natalie, Isabella, Gigi and Lilia´s life because you would have done that for me. I miss you more than I can express here and my life will not be the same without you in it but my life would never be what it is today if it weren´t for you. See you again my friend . Love, Lisa Wing
