Tom Gallenstein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4, 2023.
Cincinnati - Tom Gallenstein, 92, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on September 28, 2023. He was born on December 3, 1930, in Cincinnati, Ohio where he remained an active, lifelong member of his Forest Hills/Cincinnati community.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, JoAnn; his 4 daughters, Anne (Rick), Mimi (Mark) Bateman, Trish Sullivan, and Jane (Joe) Runge; his 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He will be joining his beloved parents, Gladys and Paul in heaven.

Tom attended Guardian Angels Elementary School, Purcell High School, and the University of Cincinnati for both his undergraduate and graduate studies.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Tom exuded joy, especially in the presence of children. He had a ready smile usually accompanied by a kind and encouraging word.

Tom proudly served in the Army's Airborne Division for 2 years during the Korean war.

Tom had a lifelong career in education, serving in numerous roles from substitute teaching to school administrator and continued working part-time as a school psychologist into his early 70s.

Tom relished being immersed in his countless interests including harness horse racing; Christmas tree farming and ever ongoing building projects.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, 10/9, at Guardian Angels Church, with visitation starting at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 am. Burial will take place at Guardian Angels Cemetery.

My Uncle Tom was a good man, through and through. He was kind to everyone he knew and everyone he met. As everyone will say, he was always smiling. My brother Eric & I would spend every summer at Grandpa's farm in Tate Township and Uncle Tom was always there, working on one project or another and just spending time with us while we were there. He especially enjoyed taking us to "the rope store" (for a creamy whip). I'd like to take credit for constructing part of the house and part of the building behind the house, but we didn't even dent it compared to Grandpa and Uncle Tom. We never could figure out why there wasn't a better way to get shingles up to the roof instead of carrying them up the ladder (where we did about 5% and Tom did the other 95%). When he and Joann came out for Eric's wedding, I drove them around Boston and he banked many a story from that trip and my driving habits. Trish & Ann should remember our trip to Old Ironsides (18" of solid white oak; cannonballs bounced off it). We had a good time catching up in Augusta in 2017 right after Julie & I moved back east from CA. I'll definitely miss him and hope to see him again some day, but hopefully not too soon. As Kyra said, we're all lucky to have known him.

Uncle Tom was an above and beyond good big brother, uncle, dad, grandfather, son and neighbor,...and so much more. We were all so lucky to have him in our lives. Kyra Montgomery
