Tyler Cary Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, 2022.
Tyler Dodd Cary passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022. He was born on June 23, 1991, in Nyack, NY. He moved to Marlboro, NY in 1997 and graduated from Marlboro High School in 2009. He studied Engineering at Cooper Union in Manhattan for one year, before transferring to RPI and graduating with a BS in Physics in 2012. He earned his Masters in Physics in 2014 at UC Davis (California) while pursuing his PhD and working as a Teaching and Research Assistant.

Tyler was passionate about running (in Vibrams or barefoot), playing saxophone in various bands and with friends, and engaging in good conversation. He enjoyed family vacations on Long Beach Island with his extended family, attending live stand-up comedy and traveling to new places. The last few years were difficult ones as he struggled with addiction and mental health issues. As one of his college friends wrote: "He was handsome, charming, kind, smart and simply wonderful to be around. He developed wonderful relationships with ease. He made many people's lives richer having known him. I've been missing him for a long time."

Tyler's warm smile and easy laugh will stay in our hearts forever.

Tyler is survived by his parents John and Susan Rusk Cary, his two brothers Ben (Ashley) and Ryan; his paternal grandparents George and Beth Cary, maternal grandparents George and Marie Rusk, many aunts and uncles and fourteen loving cousins.

A gathering to remember Tyler's life will be held at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY on Saturday, November 12 from 1-4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Bridge Foundation in Berkeley, CA or Family of Woodstock Inc. in Kingston, NY.

On the one year anniversary of Tyler's passing, Jane and I wanted to offer our continuing support, thoughts, prayers, friendship and love to John and Sue. Life is a journey with challenges and losses, as well as all the good things. You are not alone and Jane and I are always here for you as we continue on this journey together. Tyler is smiling down on you knowing how much he was and is loved and what great parents and role models you are.

Mr. and Mrs. Cary,

We are Russell Hawkins´ parents. We want to extend our condolences to you at this most difficult time. We got to be around Tyler a few times during the many times we were up in Davis and he was so sweet and attentive. He and Russell had many philosophical conversations and we know he enjoyed being housemates with Tyler. God bless you and your beautiful family.

Dear Cary family and friends,

Tyler and I entered UC Davis in the same year, and we had also been working in the same group for several years. He had a great personality and was easy to get along with. So, even with our cultural differences, we could still share our thoughts without a wall in between. I remember we once went to UCSC with other group members for a conference in 2015. During the conference we talked about everything from physics to funny jokes. It was a wonderful trip.

The time I spent with Tyler was unforgettable, and I will forever treasure those memories. Wish he had found peace.

I first want to thank everyone for all the outpouring of your love and kind thoughts! We have had such tremendous support from our local friends and family, out-of-town friends, my friends and colleagues at Marist, Tyler's friends from Marlboro and his college friends and professors, some of whom we did not even know, and too many others to mention.

Additionally, we were overwhelmed with the number of people who turned out for the celebration of Tyler's life, held at "The Falcon" in Marlboro, NY. This was a favorite hangout for Tyler and many of his friends and a place he enjoyed.

I can't begin to tell you how much I love this guy and the lessons and things he taught me as his father. He has touched so many lives and I will think about him every day and remember all the great times we had together...running together, going to comedy shows, playing music, and simply enjoying life!

I love you Tyler and will miss you dearly!

To the Cary family and family friends,

I am beyond devastated with the news of Tyler's passing. Him and I met at RPI our Sophomore year and became fast friends. We grew closer our Junior year and started regularly hanging out and going for runs. Tyler was kind enough to invite me to many shows of his band, "Bump". It was there that I met Jared and the three of us were inseparable.

I have so many great memories that Tyler is a part of that I will carry with me forever - going out for my 21st birthday, doing our tedious physics homework at Folsom Library until 3am and then getting Bella's pizza after, going to his friend, TJ's parties back in Marlboro, going on canoe trips down the Hudson... the list is endless. Whenever I tell others about my time at RPI and what my experience was like, I always tell them about my friend, Tyler. He was always someone you could talk to. He was always someone you could ask for help. He was always so willing to go the extra mile for you. And he was smart as heck. I was always so jealous of Tyler's (and Jared's!) physics intuition. He was good - very good.

Our classes were made so much more enjoyable because of Tyler. At least mine, anways! Jared, Tyler and I had so many inside jokes and I can remember a number of times we almost got in trouble for laughing so hard during class. No words were necessary - only gestures and facial expressions. It was a riot.

I have found myself looking back on the time that I got to spend with Tyler with great nostalgia and sadness, but also comfort. He was a good runner, a great physicist, and an even better friend. I will miss him dearly.

I met Tyler at UC Davis, we were office neighbours and friends. He was cheerful, fun and funny. He welcomed me as an international student, and he can talk about anything. He often invited me to bars and watched comedy together. One time he drove us to San Francisco and spent a night there, it was my first trip to SF. My time at UC Davis would have been boring without him. I was shocked and deeply sadden by the sudden loss of Tyler. My condolences goes to his beloved family and friends.

I met Tyler through my husband, Matt Gallagher, as he was a student of his. Matt has always spoken highly of Tyler so it wasn't a surprise when I met him. He had a warm smile and was very talented. My condolences to the family.

I was in grad school with Tyler but an older year. We didn't overlap much because I was stationed at Berkeley Lab for a long time. However, one summer we helped drive the REU students to see the solar eclipse in Oregon in 2017. Tyler was my co-driver for the 8 hour road trip (and 13 hours back because of eclipse traffic!). He was the perfect co-driver, very sweet, open and still easy to get along with after 13 hours of traffic! I remember how easy it was to chat and singing to the radio. My condolences to his family and friends.

A devastating loss. Tyler Cary was such an amazing young man. Talented, intelligent and so kind. As his former teacher, he was one of those people that made me realize how lucky I am that I choose to become a music teacher. He made my life better by just being who he was. He will be missed and my love to all his family who were all so kind to me as well. I would like to include this photo of a fun time we had together. Goodbye Tyler, love you.

Tyler was such a great person, and I am in shock to hear this news, I am so sorry for your loss. I had a similar struggle almost 10 years ago, and I have lost too many friends this way, and this is a tragedy.

I don't know what I can say to help, but I'll just speak to what Tyler meant to me. We shared an office together at UC Davis, and every time he came in it put a smile on my face. We had great conversations about life, politics, careers, and dating. I was experiencing intense depression during my time at UC Davis, and Tyler helped me to get through it. He made me feel heard and understood, and sometimes that's all we need to get through a hard day.

I don't think I ever shared my battle with addiction with him, and I didn't know about his, and I wish this wasn't the case. He will be missed, he was such a caring and open-minded person, and the world is a better place because he was in it.

Tyler was and will always be my best friend. The past couple of years have been so hard for him and the people close to him, my heart breaks at the slightest thought. He was taken from us too soon but I find some comfort knowing that he's not struggling anymore.

He was the most genuine, amazing person I've had the pleasure of knowing. I'll cherish every moment I got to spend with him, he meant the world to me and I feel so lost with out him. I'll always remember him as he really was, a beacon of joy and love to everyone around him.

To the Cary family, I love you & I'll always be there for you.

Tyler you were an amazing friend and an incredible person to have known. You were the first person I met on my first day at RPI, and you became my brother in arms during those intense and formative years of study. Your insightful thoughts on science, philosophy, religion, comedy, music and even the mundane were just such a joy to share in conversation, and I will never forget those warm summer nights around the backyard fire, the long hours spent working out physics problems in Folsom library, and the countless hysterical laughs we shared. Your friendship during RPI and after - travelling across the country from New York to California together, Christmas time Troy reunions, and California visits meant more to me than I can express.

I am beyond honored to have known you, and forever grateful for all the good memories and the place you occupied in my life. I wish I could sign this off with a reference to one of the many, many inside jokes we all crafted throughout the years, but I am too crushed to recall any at the moment. Jake will have to help me with that one...

To Tyler´s family - you have my deepest sympathy. I am so sorry for what you have gone through, and I wish healing and peace for you all.
