Vera Powers

Vera Powers passed away peacefully from thyroid cancer at her home in Scottsdale, Arizona, on December 28, 2024, at the age of 77.

Vera was born on June 15, 1947, in Germany to Ukrainian parents, Paraska and John Humeny. The family relocated to Chicago in 1949, where Vera grew up speaking both Ukrainian and English fluently.

A dedicated nurse, Vera graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing with an RN and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of St. Francis. She worked as a nurse in Chicago for over 30 years before retiring to enjoy the Arizona sunshine. Vera found peace and joy in her Scottsdale home, where she loved the stunning desert views from her backyard.

Vera met her beloved husband, Michael Powers, in 1964. They married in 1971 and raised three children: daughters Cariann (Dan) and Michele (Kevin), and son John (Megan). She was also a proud grandmother of five: Gavin, Madeline, Sarah, Elliott, and Aiden.

Vera had a love for many things, but most of all, she cherished her family, her pets, music, and books. She adored her Siamese cats and her dogs Sparky, Silkie, Kirby, and Bertie. A true book lover, Vera was never without a novel, whether it was a mystery, science fiction, or fantasy.

Vera will always be remembered for her strength, resilience, and authenticity. She was funny and smart, skeptical and contrarian. Generous in every way, she was a trusted confidante to those she loved and always made time to listen when we needed her. She gave the wisest advice.

While their grief feels unbearable, her family finds comfort in the time they had with her. They are grateful for the opportunity to say goodbye and to ensure she knew how deeply she was loved. Solace comes from knowing she is no longer suffering, but instead, at peace, enjoying her favorite things in a place of joy. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Scottsdale Public Library, which provided an endless supply of books that brought great happiness to Vera.
