William Ellis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2023.
Dr. William Ellis unexpectedly left this earth on January 18, 2023, doing what he loved the most: flying his airplane. He was a man who loved adventure, taking up flying in his 50s. He also loved downhill skiing, whitewater rafting as well as golf, often taking his two sons, William Benson Ellis and Charles Edward Ellis with him.William, called Bill by his friends and family, was born on December 28, 1942, in the Bronx borough of New York City to Benson Abraham Ellis (Epstein), a then-NYC fireman and policeman, and Pauline (Pearl) Fishman-Ellis. When Bill was 13, his family moved to the Bay Area where his father became a community college biology teacher.During his 80 years on earth, he spent more than 50 years as an ophthalmologist.Dr. William Ellis, M.D., F.A.C.S. dedicated his career to bringing innovative surgical techniques to the restoration of vision. He began his career by studying electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He then attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, receiving his Doctorate of Medicine. Dr. Ellis completed a surgical internship at Duke University and residency at Stanford University Medical Center in the Department of Ophthalmology. He was then Board Certified in general ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He was also certified as a sub-specialist in cataract, intraocular lens implantation, and refractive surgery by the American Board of Eye Surgery.Dr. Ellis was a leader and innovator in the field of refractive surgery. He studied radial keratotomy surgery with Professor Svyatslov Fyodorov in the Soviet Union. Dr. Ellis wrote three textbooks on Keratoplasty surgeries, which are in medical libraries around the world. Professor Fyodorov, who pioneered modern radial keratotomy, is a co-author of his last textbook. He is survived by his sons, Willian Benson Ellis and Charles Edward (Annie) Ellis, along with grandchildren Rose Ellis and Axel Ellis. Bill, Dad, and Grandpa Bill will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and professional colleagues.

Closest friends while working at NIH(NHLI) Bethesda Md. 1970-1972.
He convinced me to become an Ophthalmologist and to invest in fine wine.
He was a very nice and smart person.

I was very worried because good God it's your eyesight at stake, Dr Ellis had really superb credentials so I picked him and and he did an excellent job on my lasik surgery, thankfully he corrected my blurry myopia to 20/20 vision, I will always remember him very fondly.

I served Dr Ellis as his MedMal broker for 10 years. Our relationship became a Bill and Dave business friendship.

Can´t think of a better business person to work nor a better human being who shared his life history from time to time

I always worried about the flying but he loved it dearly

I just learned of his passing when I called to make an appointment. I was his patient for over 40 years. Always friendly with a twinkle in his eye. He has his wings...fly high, Dr Ellis.

I had the pleasure of being Dr. Ellis's medical malpractice insurance broker for 12 years. Working through difficult renewals and occasional patient allegations demands lots of communications. His renewal date was 3/1 so we were right in the middle of that process a year ago when I learned of the accident. Bill was an amazing task master to work with. Usually I have to stay after physicians to provide me needed information, but with Bill it was just the opposite as he contacted me frequently to check on my progress. I was stunned at hearing the bad news and am glad to have had the opportunity to know this great man. David

About 30 years ago I had the pleasure of working with Dr, Ellis on some marketing, such a quick thinker and dynamic person who touched the lives of so many people, truly a treasure of a man.

Thank you Dr. Ellis for your phenomenal work as an eye surgeon. You performed my Epi-LASIK procedure at your clinic in September 2007 and I still have excellent vision to this day.

I knew Bill Ellis as a surgeon and a pilot. His hanger was very close to mine. He was a rare person and he is missed.

I am SO deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Ellis' passing. I am a neighbor farther up Rose Lane, and I would always look forward to seeing Dr. Ellis on his walks up the lane -- I would go outside to catch him on his way back down and have a chat. I could recognize him a mile away with his suspenders and always a nice shirt. He loved talking about the neighborhood, including my house, and how things had changed over the years. Most recently we were talking about kids and their injuries, and he recalled how he was able to stitch up his sons' injuries himself, being a doctor. And he was an admirer of my Bernese and got a chuckle from my chickens when they were loose. I am very very sad to lose Dr. Ellis from Happy Valley; I will really miss having him in the fabric of the neighborhood. Please accept my condolences.
