William Kelly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 7, 2014.
William H. Kelly fell asleep in the arms of the Lord on April 6, 2014 at the age of 73. Born June 27, 1940 in Kingston, NY, he was a prominent member of the Long Island Community, living in the Incorporated Village of Asharoken before retiring to Williamsburg five years ago, with his wife and children.

Bill attended Villanova University where he received his degree in electrical engineering. He went on to a Masters Degree in Economics from Georgetown University. While living on Long Island, he was the sole proprietor of WHK Leasing, a high technology equipment leasing company since 1976.

Bill successfully ran for Mayor of the Village of Asharoken in 1982 and continued his commitment to public service for the next 26 years. He worked tirelessly for the Village, as well as, the State of New York, and Suffolk County. Bill was President of the NYS Conference of Mayors in 1988 and President of the Suffolk County and Tri County Village Officials Associations in 1989. In 1999 he served on the NYS Local Government Records Advisory Committee, appointed by the NYS Commissioner of Education, and had an annual award named after him for his major role in Local Government Records Programs.

Bill had a great passion for reading with a personal library of 6000 books. His favorite topic was history, in particular the Civil War. He was a member of the Civil War Roundtable in Williamsburg. Bill continuously promoted the ideals of conservatism throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Philadelphia Society, a member of the Heritage Foundation, as well as, a supporter of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. The ideals of these organizations shaped who he was as a public servant, husband and father. In his leisure time he enjoyed time with his family and fishing off the back deck of his home in Asharoken overlooking the Long Island Sound.

Bill was a lifelong Kiwanian starting out in Key Club at Kingston High School. He received the Legion of Honor for 30 years of service, as well as, the Hixson Fellow. He was devoted to the Northport/East Northport Kiwanis Club and continued his community involvement with the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club. He served as a member of the board from 2010 to 2013, Key Club Advisor to Walsingham Academy since 2011 and actively participated in all Kiwanis events throughout the year.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 18 years Ann Kelly, his daughter Morgan and his son Kevin of Williamsburg, his brother J Terence Kelly, niece Laura Garcia Kelly, nephew Paul Kelly of Miami, Florida and another brother Jeffrey Kelly of Kingston, NY.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2014 3:00 to 5:00 pm, and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg VA 23188. The celebration of the Divine Liturgy will take place at 10:00 am, Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, 114 Palace Lane, Williamsburg, VA 23185 followed by interment at Williamsburg Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, 114 Palace Lane, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

The Kelly family wishes to thank the loving support of Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, Walsingham Academy, Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg and all our friends and neighbors.

I just learned of Bill's passing and am very saddened. I first came to know Bill by attending the annual dinner of the Pumpkin Papers Irregulars in Washington DC. From there Bill introduced me to the Philadelphia Society and sponsored my membership in 2012. Bill had a great sense of humor and was genuinely interested in mentoring people he thought would be of benefit to the organization. I will miss seeing him at various events but will be forever grateful for the friendship and interest he displayed to me. My sympathies to the Kelly family. Curt Schroder, Downingtown, Pennsylvania

Ann, Morgan, and Kevin,
Bill was a wonderful Brother and he was especially generous to my two children, Laura and Paul. For an example he gave them a magnificent pool in my backyard and now the grandchildren used it as well is my friends and me. How nice is that! He was delightful, funny and heartwarming. A better Brother you could not have.

Dear Ann, Morgan and Kevin... I was so sorry to hear the sad news about the loss of your dear husband and father. Bill was a long-time friend of my husband, John and myself, and he and John were loyal fellow Kiwanians. I fondly remember how surprised and delighted we were when we heard that Bill had finally met the girl of his dreams - and she had been right there in Northport all those years. What a beautiful wedding you had. I have so many fond, funny memories of Bill, and I will cherish the memories. My heart goes out to you in your loss. Gloria Almberg, Jupiter, Fl. (formerly Northport, NY)

Ann, Morgan and Kevin-my sympathies and best wishes at this time.

Bill was my very best friend for 45 years and I will miss him.

Many adventures and great times we had together-because he was so much fun to be around. I will never forget one fishing trip on my boat in Miami. All morning we saw coast guard helicopters flying around. Then we saw a man waving and we waved back-then realized he was in a life jacket and had been in the water-12 hours. We ended up taking him to shore. We felt like rescuers that day and talked of it for years.

I am including a picture from one of our many fishing trips together (at least 30-40) we caught a large number of Mahi including this record 70 pounder.

I could write a book on the hundreds of talks, the days of fishing trips and good times we had together. I will miss him terribly-he was my dearest and best friend. GOD BLESS.

Hello Ann--We are so sorry to hear about Bill's passing. He was larger than life! We remember how Bill and our son, Nick, struck up a friendship during those great July 4th parties on Asharoken. Great memories. You and the children will be in our thoughts.

Dear Ann, Morgan and Kevin,
We, as a family, will always remember the wonderful times shared at the beach.
The firewroks, the scavenger hunts, and of course the mussels.

Dear Ann, Morgan, and Kevin, I will be stopping by Saint Charles this afternoon to light a candle, say a prayer....Bill lived life in his own terms and what a great life he had! I consider him a role model -actively involved and engaged with a passion for his interests and community service. We should all take a lesson from his rule book . With much love and sympathy. Dear Ann, Morgan and Kevin,
My heart truly aches for all of you at the loss of Bill. All of you remain to this day a special memory for me and the times we shared in Northport and Asharoken. The pumpkin picking, the Easter egg coloring, the times with the kids, and oh the martini poured at the kitchen counter. And the stories....the great stories that only Bill could tell. I will pray for you all and hope that you will find comfort in knowing the fine man he was...he will live on in all of you. My deepest condolences. You are all in my prayers. Rest in Peace Bill Kelly

Ann, I am sorry for your loss. Bill aka Kelly was always a positive force when I was growing up; from hiking, to putting up Christmas lights, and of course going to Saratoga Race Track. I will miss his jokes and of course all of those tricks!! Thanks for all the fond memories Bill (Kelly).

Ann and Family,

So sorry for your loss. Bill was a great person. A true friend and loving Father. He will be missed.

I'm sure he is pulling up a stool next to WC Fields in Heaven. What I wouldn't give to hear those two exchange jokes. RIP my one and only Godfather.

Ann, our prayers are for you and the kids. We were so fortunate to have Bill as a good friend. He will be greatly missed. I can just see it now; the occupants of Heaven are already being wrapped around Bill, as he relates stories and jokes as only Bill can tell them. In life you hope to encounter someone like Bill, but to have them as your good friend is priceless. His calling around 11 pm to say, I'm in town, and by the way I will be at your house shortly, then the family sitting up half the night laughing with him and catching up on all the adventures. Our kids will never forget Bill, and our family will have a void that can never be filled. What a friend and Mentor. Bill you were one of a kind, and will be missed. Thanks for the memories.

Bill, I am heading to the Catholic Church up the road to light a candle and say a prayer for you. You were an awesome human being, the best of us. You made a real difference in my life and I will miss you terribly. I remember you taking me to Annie, second row seats! Also sugar babies with the incomparable Mickey Rooney.
