Michael Mathewson Obituary

MARYSVILLE — Michael Kent Mathewson, age 64, died unexpectedly Thursday, November 4, 2021 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Mike reported to work on Wednesday, November 3rd and returned home following a productive day, only to suffer from a massive brain aneurysm later in the evening. He died a few hours later as a result of his unknown health condition.

He enjoyed his "retirement job" with Taylor Township where he assisted with cemetery maintenance, snow removal and various other township duties. He was an retired associate of Honda of America, Marysville Auto Plant, for 26 years where he worked in assembly. Following his retirement from Honda on November 1, 2017, he began his affiliation with Taylor Township. Prior to working at Honda, he was an associate of Dana Corporation. As a youth growing up in Ada, Ohio, he held many jobs including newspaper boy and worked at the grain elevator, gas station and auto body shop. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Marysville since 2000. An outdoorsman, he liked hunting and fishing and was a member of Richwood Gun and Game Club, Ohio Gun Club Association and was a life member of the NRA. An accomplished welder, Mike made knives and axes on his own forge at home. He honed his welding skills while working at Honda. He loved to read, especially Louis L'Amour, and was a fan of Ford trucks. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandsons, Jayden and Silas, teaching them how to be men, while enjoying campfires, making Ramen noodles and sipping hot chocolate. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandpa and brother. He was born October 23, 1957 in Bluffton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his son in 2004, Jason Kent Mathewson; in 1964, by his brother, John Scott Mathewson; his uncles, Bob Mathewson and Max Rodabaugh; his aunt, Marilyn Mathewson Deringer; his father-in-law, Jerry Ream.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kimberly Ann Ream Mathewson, whom he married October 22, 1983 at Eagle Creek Baptist Church in Forest, Ohio; his daughter, Krista (Mervin) Mathewson Colgan; his beloved grandsons, Jayden and Silas Mitchell; his parents, Kent and Mary Moe Mathewson, of Bluffton, formerly of Ada; his brother, Robert "Bob" (Cheri) Mathewson; his mother-in-law, Mary Ream of Ada; his in-laws, Tina (Michael) Rettig, Bruce (Cindy) Ream and Penni (Mike) Johnson; his aunts, Judy Rodabaugh and Karen Epley; his nephews and nieces, Tanner (Danielle Redman) Mathewson, Mary Faulds, Kirsten Rettig, Caleb (Katie) Rettig, Hannah (Jake) Bowyer, Jessica (Matt Wolfe) Ream, Zachary Ream, Brett (Austin) Leonard, Mycala (Tobe) Drew, Taylor Johnson, Nolan Johnson, Liam Johnson; and several great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Underwood Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2021. Pastor Luke Craymer will officiate and burial will be at Raymond Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Bliss, Kevin Bliss, Bill McComas, Ivan Work, Darrell Grove, Billy Hill, Jayden Mitchell and Silas Mitchell.

Memorial contributions may be made to Project Linus of Union County, Ohio, The Richwood Gun and Game Club or Calvary Baptist Church.
