MARION -- Sarah Jane (Meffley) Finnegan, age 63, of Marion, passed away Monday, December 27, 2021 at Marion General Hospital.
Sarah was born in Lima, Ohio on February 2, 1958 to the late Gordon and Azuba (Wolfe) Meffley. Sarah graduated from Lima Shawnee High School in 1976. She furthered her education at Miami University where she earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Speech Pathology.
Upon graduating from Miami, Sarah moved to Marion and met a young attorney, William "Bill" Finnegan. Sarah and Bill fell in love and were married on June 30, 1984.
Sarah was a first-rate Speech Therapist during her entire 39 year career. She worked for Marion Speech and Hearing, MARCA, and found her true calling working for the Marion City Schools for 23 years. Sarah loved working with her students and with the fine teachers and staff in the Marion City School system. Sarah had a particular passion to help children with autism and children with multiple disabilities learn to communicate with others, helping them reach their full potential.
Always a woman of faith, Sarah was raised as a Methodist, but as her husband was of a different religious faith, Sarah was able to grow in faith and make life-long friends in two religious congregations, the Epworth United Methodist Church and with Saint Mary Parish. In the last few years of her life, Sarah became a member of the Catholic faith.
Sarah was a past member of Women Business and Professional Society.
Sarah will be missed by her husband, Judge William "Bill" Finnegan of Marion; children, Alana Finnegan of Bellville, Ohio and John (Caroline) Finnegan of Columbus, Ohio; siblings, Susan (Steve) Frank of Florida and Rebecca (Jack) Warecki of California; along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues.
In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her brother, Phil Meffley.
Visitation will be held at Snyder Funeral Homes, Gunder/Hall Chapel (347 West Center St) on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 3 until 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 with Father Thomas Buffer presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Masks will be strongly encouraged.

I worked closely with Sarah for 10 years while teaching at Garfield Elementary. She would come into my classroom when I taught Preschool and work with my students. She was knowledgeable and very kind. Sarah was always patient, and hard working, but what I appreciated most about her was that she always had time to participate in the fun we had in the classroom. Sarah was the head "Gingerbread Man Rescuer" every Christmas in my Preschool Classroom, she taught my preschoolers how to "ice skate" on paper plates, make cookies on Valentine's Day, and she read to my class whenever asked. She always had time to do the special things. In fact, one of my students would refer to her as "Aunt Sarah" because she was so loved. I always enjoyed sitting in meetings with Sarah because I would learn so much. She was so kind and helpful to parents and teachers. She truly had a heart for helping children, and I will always remember her for that reason.
