Erwin Chillag Obituary

DR. ERWIN CHILLAG

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Dr. Erwin R. Chillag, 95, died peacefully Sunday, February 28, 2016, in Columbia, S.C., where three of his sons reside.

His wife, Doris Geiger Chillag, preceded him in death eight years ago. His parents were Alexander and Irene Chillag. He emigrated from Budapest, Hungary when he was three years old. His sister, Mary, died before him. He lived in Holden, W.Va., for nearly 50 years before moving to Charleston, W.Va., in 1993.

He is survived by four sons: Dana, Shawn, Jeffrey and Kim; 10 grandchildren, Kipp, Colin, Gabriel, Greta, Kata, Hallie, Ian, Zach, Jeffrey and Hannah; and seven great-grandchildren, Grace, Lylah, Samuel, Elliot, Cora, Matilda and John Henry.

Erwin Chillag graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine then entered the U.S. Army during World War II receiving his general medical and orthopedic surgery training at the University of Virginia. His medical practice included working at all the hospitals in Logan County.

He cared for countless children and adults for all types of medical problems. He performed general surgery, orthopedic practice and surgery. He delivered over 3,000 babies including a granddaughter. Some dogs and horses were also treated. He was on site and in the mines at coal mining disasters.

His practice began as penicillin became available and he saw polio vaccinations begin in the 50's. His work led to the construction of modern hospital facilities and a nursing home for Logan County.

If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please honor his life of work with donations to WVU Foundation, Doris and Erwin Chillag Medical Student Scholarship Fund, One Waterfront Place, 7th Floor

Grandpa Erwin was an amazing person. So was grandma Doris. I will always remember family gatherings at their wonderful house in West Virginia, and going skiing with him in Colorado. I am very fortunate to be one of his descendents.

Jeff, Kim, Dana, and Shawn
I have just spent a quiet 20 minutes or more reading all of these wonderful tributes to your father. Having only known him as Erwin, and only as an elderly gentleman, it's lovely to read such kindnesses. I would like to add one word no one has used - but which I felt towards your father: I found him quite adorable. Enormous love and hugs to all of you.

March 4, 2016

The Chillag family was an important part of my life growing up in Holden, WV. Dr. Chillag was the community doctor, serving all of the medical needs of the entire community - from broken bones to child deliveries. My mother Naomi worked with Dr. Chillag for many years, and later with Shawn, who followed in his father's footsteps. Dr. Chillag delivered my younger brother and sister. He made numerous house calls to the Long family when one of us was ill or injured. Mrs. Chillag was our den mother in Cub Scouts, so I new the boys from an early age. I spent many hours playing with Jeff and Kim. When it was nice outside, we played touch football or softball on the lawn, or went swimming in their pool after they moved to the Bungalow on the hill. When is was rainy, we played Monopoly or Poker, usually at my house. We continued to meet regularly at the Chillag house for poker into our young adulthood. The memories with the family will remain with me forever. Condolences and best wishes to the family. Please let me know if there's ever anything I can do to repay the kindness that you always gave to my family and me. Phone: 304-346-6184

Over 40 years ago, Doc Chillag delivered me, and as the story was told to me it was rather difficult as it took nearly two days of labor for it to finally result in me coming into this world. In none of the stories about that time, has my mother ever said she felt she was being mishandled or not taken care of properly. She was very young and needed a supportive doctor. Five years later, Christmas Day, Doc Chillag was again called to my mother's bedside because she was again in labor with her second child, he was sure there'd be plenty of time after taking nearly two days to have me, but the problem that caused my issue was no longer in effect, so he almost missed my brother's birth. I learned he also had delivered my own father as well. I hope his family finds peace in knowing he was so well respected in his community and that he provided such great services. Rest in peace Doc Chillag

My sister, Cathy, and I want to send our deepest condolences to Dr. Chillag's entire family and all who loved and will mourn the passing of such a wonderful man and dedicated physician. Dr. Chillag looked after our maternal grandmother, our mother and dad, and us (and also operated on my late husband when he broke his hip). He was a brilliant doctor yet so kind and compassionate-- just simply an exceptionally fine human being. Dr. Chillag will be deeply and truly missed. I pray Heavenly Father will surround all who mourn Dr. Chillag's passing with His love and grant the strength, comfort, and peace to bear this great loss and heal the deep pain of grief. Dr. Chillag has set sail on a journey that carried him just beyond the Veil. May he rest in peace. He will be remembered with great love and admiration.

I thank God every day for this man. We were so blessed to have him. Thank you for sharing him with us. God bless you all.
