BERNARD LINDEN Obituary
Bernard Linden, a Stone Ridge, NY resident, died suddenly on September 21, 2007. He was born June 7, 1928 in New York City to Charles and Francis Lipshitz. Bernard is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, who died in 2006. He is survived by his daughter, Louise Linden of Jakarta, Indonesia; his daughter, and son-in-law, Dan and Mara Linden Cohen, of Nyack, NY; his grandchildren, Lauren, Hannah, Sam, Ethan, and Sasha, as well as a brother, Hal, and his children and grandchildren. Bernard also leaves behind an extensive group of extended family and friends. Bernard was a professional musician who attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, after which he served in the military where he played with the Air Force Orchestra in Washington, DC. He then went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a Masters and Doctorate in Music from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Before joining the faculty of Bowling Green State University as a viola professor and member of the Bowling Green String Quartet, Bernard had an extensive performance career. He played with the New Orleans Philharmonic, the NY City Ballet, and with the NY Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. He was also a member of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Along with the University post, he played with the Chautauqua Symphony and Opera orchestras. He also spent summers performing at the Marlboro Music Festival as well as the Aspen Music Festival. After retiring from Bowling Green, he spent several years as a member of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, Portugal. When Bernard and Dorothy relocated to Ulster County in 2003, he became a regular violist with several regional orchestras and chamber music groups. He literally died while performing with a string quartet for Yom Kippur Services in Kingston, NY. His passion for music will always be our strongest memory of him and it is comforting to his family that he died doing what he loved the most. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and we already miss him dearly. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday in Nyack.
