My father passed away November 30, 2017, he lived a long wonderful life and looking at the old pictures and thinking back to some of the holidays and events throughout the 60 years that I have been alive, it makes me realize that we are only here for a short time and we should make the best of it.
I think my father along with my mother did that. Together along with the struggles he dealt with in his 94 years, I think he truly had a wonderful life, we will miss him, but it was his time to say goodbye and he is not suffering anymore.
And we will have the pictures and past memories to remember him by. The memories of hunting down grapes in Astoria to make his wine, he did enjoy a nice large glass of red wine with a lot of ice, I never understood the ice, doesn't that water down the wine?
New Years, Easter, Birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas in years past. The way he enjoyed and loved his grandchildren.
Sunday trips to Oyster Bay beach, the trips to Wading River when we would sleep in our cars, on the lawn, the living room floor. The 3 room house with 7 rooms of furniture, fireworks exploding on the beach, fishing in his little boat and for me never catching a porgy or flounder, Sunday mass at St. Andrews, then a stop at Graziano's Ravioli for Sunday cold cuts after church lunch, a couple of times it snowed hard and he would get up at 5 am and help Mike, Perry and Jim get to the Long Island Press paper hub to make sure they were OK, and my father sitting on the couch watching Laural and Hardy or Abbot and Costello, the Flintstones or Dead End Kids and Huntz Hall, and laughing at the stupid jokes, and he would laugh so hard, it was contagious. He was a nice guy and we shall miss him.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness, and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo...and it's worth fighting for.
