JOSEPH CALLAHAN Obituary

Joseph M. Callahan, Jr. of Rye, NY died October 30, 2001 at Bronx Veterans Medical Center, Bronx, New York City. Mr. Callahan was an Attorney for New York Corporation Counsel in Manhattan. He was with the company for 20 years before retiring in 1980. Mr. Callahan was born February 2, 1916 in New York City to Joseph and Elizabeth Madden Callahan. He was educated in Manhattan and graduated from Manhattan Prep School. He earned a degree from Mount St. Mary's College and from Brooklyn Law School and Mount St. Mary's College located in Emitsburg, MD. Mr. Callahan served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 attaining the rank of Captain. Also served in 8th Army Headquarters in Korea. In World War II he was with 9th Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge in Elsen Born Ridge. On August 30, 1959 he married Virginia A. Beck. Mr. Callahan lived in Rye for the past 32 years. Before that he lived in the Bronx. Locally he was a parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection. He is survived by his wife Virginia and three sisters Joan Callahan of Southampton, NY, Mary Ayres of the Bronx, Anne Healey of Summit, NJ. Family members who died earlier include Elizabeth and Supreme Court Judge Joseph M. Callahan, parents, and Eleanor Healey, Alfred and William Callahan, sister and brothers. Calling hours are Friday 3-8 pm at Graham Funeral Home, 1036 Post Rd., Rye, NY. The funeral is 9:45 Saturday at Church of the Resurrection, Rye. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, NY.
