Martin Murray Obituary

Murray, Martin R.

Martin R. Murray of Pearl River, NY, formerly of New City, NY, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at The Joe Raso Hospice Residence, New City, NY. He was 84.

Martin was born January 13, 1933 to Joseph and Margaret Murray in the Bronx, NY. Siblings Joseph, Jr. and Lorretta predeceased Marty. Marty grew up in the shadow of Yankee Stadium enjoying sports, especially football and baseball and made many life-long friends there. He met his bride-to-be, Helen, in high school. Marty was the first in his family to attend college and after graduating from Fordham University, he and Helen were married in 1955. Marty entered the U.S. Marine Corp Officer Training Program in Quantico, Virginia where he and Helen spent the next 3 years and their two sons, Richard and Keith, were born. After completing the Officer Training Program, Marty achieved the rank of Marine Corp Captain and served in the Reserves for several years. He also began a career in the transportation industry that would span the next 40+ years and where he would meet his and Helen's dear friends, Dick and Barbara Parks, with whom they took many memorable trips.

Marty and Helen later moved to New City, where they were blessed with daughters Jeanie and Krissy, and made many friends and memories on Grand Street. Marty worked hard and provided all that his family needed, including imparting a set of core values that live on in his children and their children. Family was always his first priority; nothing gave him more pleasure than watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports or other activities. Marty and Helen seldom missed any event in support of family or friends. Marty was proud of his Marine Corp service and a devout Catholic.

Marty is survived by his four children, their spouses (Melissa, Ann, Tom, and Jamie), and nine grandchildren: Heather, Kaelyn, Hannah, Luke, Emily, Andrew, Erin, Taylor, and Liam; he is predeceased by granddaughter Claire. He recently became a great-grandfather to Fiona, Hannah's daughter. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Marty will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Visiting will be held at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc., on Friday, July 21 from 3-5:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Aedan Roman Catholic Church in Pearl River on Saturday, July 22 at 10:00 a.m.. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Marty's behalf to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Cindy and I were very sad to hear of Uncle Marty's passing. I will always remember visiting the Murray's house every summer and their family visiting Bristol at Easter time. Uncle Marty was a big part of my childhood and I will always remember him fondly. My thought and prayers are with the Murray family.
