RUTH KEELER Obituary

Ruth Keeler, 94, died September 1, 2003 at her home, Keeler Homestead, in North Salem. She was born at the homestead on November 2, 1908, the daughter of Floyd and Romola (Lyon) Keeler, She was a graduate of the Dwight School and attended Sweet Briar College. The homestead was a land grant from the King of England in the early 1700's. Miss Keeler managed the farm business of the homestead for many years. She also served the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was an airplane spotter during World War II. Miss Keeler was an Honorary Trustee of the North Salem Historical Society. A lover of dogs, she not only raised them in her own kennel but, in later years, made a home for homeless elderly dogs. Miss Keeler was predeceased by her sister, Kathryn Sherrill, and is survived by her nephews, Leicester and Christopher Sherrill and their families; a first cousin, Margaret Lyon of Berkeley, California, and other extended family. A Memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in North Salem at 3 pm on Friday, September 12, 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Salem Historical Society, St. James Episcopal Church, Hospice of Westchester County, or a charity of one's choice. The Beecher Funeral Home in Brewster is handling the arrangements.
