Steven Riddle Obituary

RIDDLE, DR. STEVEN LAWRENCE, 51, passed away peacefully as a result of complications from a hemorrhagic stroke on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at Baptist Hospital East surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born March 16, 1960 in Louisville, Kentucky to Lawrence and Mary Jane Landers Riddle.

Dr. Riddle was a Trinity High School graduate, Class of 1978. Before attending the University of Kentucky, he studied abroad in France for one year. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in biology. He continued his studies at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and graduated in 1986. After the completion of his internship and residency, he remained with the University as an Associate Professor starting his career doing what he loved most, teaching. Later, Dr. Riddle became board certified in internal medicine.

In 1991, he started a private solo practice in Carrollton, Kentucky. In 2002, he became a hospitalist for several hospitals throughout the state of Kentucky. At the time of his death, he was working as a hospitalist for Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital.

Dr. Riddle devoted his life to taking care of his patients, and even upon his death he continued to help people by donating his organs to Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA).

Being a member of Big Spring Country Club, Steve was an avid golfer, sometimes playing 36 holes on a weekend day. He trained and coached at Synergy Martial Arts and was a second degree black belt. He encouraged and inspired students to always work hard and give their very best leading many of them to numerous national championships, including his children, William and Jenny. Having a love for football, Steve assisted on the sidelines as team doctor for the Middletown Youth Optimist League where his son, Ross, played for many years. Steve was a devoted UK Wildcat fan and loved watching them. As an exercise enthusiast, Steve worked out regularly at the YMCA, where he had many friends.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Trish Tooley Riddle; sons, Eric Ross and William Lawrence; daughter, Jennifer Lauren Riddle; his father, Lawrence Riddle and mother, Mary Jane Riddle who passed away peacefully several hours after her son; brother, Mark Riddle (Robin) and their children, Brittany and Blair; his aunt, Betty Sue Lerding, and her daughter, Karin Brown; his father-in-law, William O. Tooley; brothers-in-law, Bruce Tooley (Beulah) and their children, Eli (Misti), Katie (Bert), Sarah (Brent), Miriam and Mary (Sam) and Alan Tooley (Theresa) and their son, Alex; sisters-in-law, Susan Barnes (Ben) and their daughters, Amy (John), Julie (Rob) and Jessica (Joe); Kathy Barter (Mark) and their daughters, Whitney, Melissa (Marc) and Hillary; and Nancy Wimpsett (Gary) and their children, Brian, Timothy and Emily; 10 great-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

Memorial services for Dr. Riddle will be held noon Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Broadway Baptist Church, 4000 Brownsboro Road, with a private burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 - 8 p.m. Monday, September 5, 2011, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to YMCA Big Brothers Big Sisters and KODA.

God bless you, Larry. I just happened to see Steve's obituary on the internet today and am still in shock -- especially when I see that "Dean" passed away at nearly the same time. (Strangely, I was just thinking about her a few days ago!) After dating Steve for three years (while we were in medical school), I have always loved him. I hope you are doing well. Give Mark and Robin my love, too. Glenda Dahlquist

Dr Riddle is the most intelligent man that I have ever known. Working by his side he taught me more in 1 year than I had learned in 10 years of nursing. He was a great friend and role model and the world of medicine will never be the same without him.

Years ago, being a new grad nurse at Frankfort Regional, talking to Dr Riddle scared me! But then I got to know him and realized just how intelligent and how caring he was to his patients. He loved to teach us newbies. The 3 years I worked with him taught me so much. My heart goes out to his family and friends. May God Bless you all.

I remember Dr. Riddle showing us his karate moves right in front of the nurses' station in the hallway at Frankfort Regional Medical Center! It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it! A life taken too soon from his family; find peace knowing that he is up in Heaven.

Trish: Though I don't know if we ever met, I have such fond memories of Steve as a youngster and young man during the years when I was a close friend of Lawrence and Mary Jane. Like his brother, Mark, Steve was brought up to be friendly, polite modest and charming by his parents and was a delight to know. I was so saddened to hear about his passing. Such a loss! My deepest sympathy to you and all of the memberss of yours and Steve's families. Sincerely, Jan Buchanan

Dr. Riddle was an amazing doctor. He was my dr after a horrible car accident when he was an intern. I was at a bad point in my life and without his encouragement I don't know how I would have made it. I was a couple of days away from being able to finally thank him. I am so sorry Trish for your loss. My prayers are with you and the kids. We are only on this earth a short time. You spent 21 years with a great person. I am sorry he was taken from you so soon.

I knew Steve while growing up on Cabin Way. He was a great guy. He use to have a work-out room in a condo down on MockingBird Valley. He would always let me come on over whenever I wanted to use his "gym." I am very sad to hear about his death. The Sams family in California is praying for you.
