Alice Sightes Obituary

Alice L. Sightes, lovingly known as "Tootsie," to her family, age 92, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025.

Born in Newport, Arkansas, to Frank and Myrtle Cook, Alice devoted her life to caring for others. She was a registered nurse who spent more than 20 years at Franciscan Health, followed by her work at Arbors Nursing Home, where she retired in 2021 at the remarkable age of 88, often saying "these old people need my love and care." Her passion for nursing was evident in every life she touched – she truly loved helping people.

Alice married Carl Sightes in 1952, and they shared a loving marriage until his passing in 1986. Later in life, she found companionship and joy with her partner, Joseph Grabiak, who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Hart and Sandra (Mike) Aratow; her sister, Betty Baldwin; six grandchildren, Corey Hart, Jason (Lauren) Hart, Natalie (Ademir) Gallardo, Allison (Jacob) Pearl, Kyle (Missy) Green and Abiri Aratow; 13 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James Cook and Doyle Franklin Cook; and sisters, Ruth Parks and Lula Belle Cook.

Beyond her nursing career, Alice was an exceptional seamstress with a lifelong love of sewing. She probably made thousands of baby blankets and wedding books for her dear work family friends! She took great joy in traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored and spoiled terribly.

Alice will be remembered for her boundless compassion, tireless work ethic and the deep love she shared with those around her. Her legacy of care, strength and devotion lives on in her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, located at 613 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana.

I haven´t seen Grandma Alice in years, but she´s always held a very special place in my heart. As a little girl, I spent so much time with her while my mom was working and going to school...countless sleepovers, mornings at her work, and warm hot chocolate in sippy cups so I wouldn´t spill on her carpet. I can still hear her gently scolding Grandpa every time he slipped me another piece of gum. She was a constant source of love, warmth, and care in my childhood. You were so dearly loved, Grandma Alice.

With all my love,
Genesis
