Darrell Pope Obituary

Darrell H. Pope Pensacola, FL Darrell H. Pope, age 78, of Pensacola, FL went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on February 6, 2009. He was born September 27, 1930, in St. Johns, Michigan, the son of Gerald and Violet Pope. Darrell was the oldest of 4 siblings. His experiences while growing up on his family's centennial farm in Clinton County, MI provided countless lessons and memories that he loved to share with his children and grandchildren. He graduated from St. Johns High School in 1948. Darrell was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in the Korean War and as a Special Agent in the office of Special Investigations (USAF). Darrell enlisted in the Michigan State Police in October of 1956. As a trooper he was stationed in Grand Haven, MI; Gladstone, MI; and later at the MSP Headquarters in East Lansing, MI. He was a member of the Michigan State Police Underwater Recovery Team, was a Michigan State Police Swimming Instructor, Recruit School Instructor, and an Investigative Services Specialist with the Detective Division (during which time he devised a central, computerized State Police file). His developmental work and expertise in Crime Scene Analysis made him a respected and called upon advisor to many police departments across the nation. He retired in 1981 as a Detective Lieutenant. During his time of enlistment, he was also a guest speaker for many organizations and events. He received a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and taught Criminal Justice at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College. His volunteer activities included developing training courses in water and boating safety--including an instruction program filmed for training purposes and circulated nationally by the Red Cross. Upon retiring, Darrell spent three years as administrator at Novi Christian School (Novi, MI). In 1984 Darrell was asked to come to Pensacola Christian College to develop/launch their Criminal Justice Program. He accepted and he and his wife Jeri moved to Pensacola, FL to begin the program where he would continue on as a Professor of Criminal Justice for 23 years. He loved teaching and everyone who knew him knew the great love he had for his students! They were one of the special joys of his life. He loved the Lord and was very active throughout his life serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher, Christian camp director and in many other capacities. He did much to promote missions and had a special heart for helping and encouraging missionary kids. Darrell was the recipient of several honors and prestigious awards during his career including "The Meritorious Service Award" (Michigan State Police-1961); twice cited for "Honorable Mention" (1961-1962); "Certificate of Merit for Idea of Unusual Worth" (Michigan State Police-1966); The Governor's Awards Commission "Distinguished Public Employee" (1977); the first recipient of the "Donald S. Leonard Award" given for professional educational achievement to a state police officer by the Michigan Bar Association; and "Unit Citation for Professional Excellence" (1981). Darrell is survived by his wife Jeri; his daughter Jill (Ron) Keilen of DeWitt, MI, his son Duncan (Daniella) Pope of Burnaby, British Columbia, his daughter Paula Pope of Simi Valley, CA, and his daughter Holly (Frederick) Forehand of Pace, FL; grandchildren, Angie Keilen of DeWitt, MI, Heidi (and Steve) Brown of Kissimee, FL, RJ (and Heather) Keilen of Scottsdale, AZ, Elijah (and Heather) Muscott of Milton, FL, Alison Keilen and Craig Keilen of DeWitt, MI, Zachary Pope of Port Moody, British Columbia, Becky Keilen and Brent Keilen of Dewitt, MI, Catherine Pope of Port Moody, British Columbia, Cara Keilen, Brandon Keilen, Christy Keilen and Amber Keilen of DeWitt, MI, Seth Forehand of Pace, FL; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene Hoag of St. Johns, MI; brother Bruce (Beth) of Las Vegas, NV; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Gerry Mae Smith. There will be a time of visitation at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns, MI on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. A Funeral Service with full Michigan State Police Honors will be held Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns, MI. Dear Mrs. Pope,
I was one of Pope's many CJ students at PCC and he was a great influence and motivator as you could see the love in his eyes for his students and the testimony he lived for Christ the short time that I had the pleasure of knowing him from 1998 -2000. I am praying for you and your family. God Bless You

Dear Mrs. Pope,
I wanted you to know what a dear man Mr. Pope was to me. He made my time at PCC a pleasure. He helped keep us as students grounded in reality while showing us by his example that you can be a Christian while dealing with unruly people. My heart goes out to you and your family and I look forward to the day that we will once again be reunited with Mr. Pope in heaven.

Dear Mrs. Pope and Family,
Please know that my heart and prayers are with you in the loss of Mr. Pope. He will always be "the Popester" to me and the CJ class. He was a great man, an encourager, giving, funny and downright fun to be around and talk with. My fondest memories of PCC all center around his classes and going over to his house and spending time just listening and learning. Mr. Pope was in my estimation, what made the CJ program at PCC so great. I will miss him as well as will all the other thousands of lives he has touched. Heaven has surely gained one tough "Sarge" and I am so proud to have known this man. Truly America as well as Christendom needs more men like Mr. Pope!!!

Sarge, The Pope, whatever fun name people may remember him by, he was the guy Pastor B. used to help keep things ship shape at Camp Bethel. Nobody in the boys dorm can forget how his "Knock it off!" could reduce the noise of rowdy kids at 10:43 at night to nothing more than the drone of box fans - instantly. There the man stood; cowboy hat, whistle dangling from his neck, bullhorn in hand. If you dared to look, through the row of bunks you'd find his imposing form in the hallway, silhouetted against the glow of lights from the dorm lobby. Yikes! His favorite song was "He Is Able". I remember the roof coming off that chapel as we sang and he'd be standing there listening, grinning ear to ear. He loved it and we sang it a lot! And those snowmobiling trips to the cottage at Higgins Lake. Good thing the town was somewhat deserted in the winter because we weren't quiet there either. At night, I remember sleeping bags covering every square inch of floor. You guys sure were brave to have us! Last night as my wife Patty (Case) and I were telling Darrell Pope stories to each other, I realized that our kids have never had a Darrell Pope in their lives. I am sorry for that. He was truly one-of-a-kind and they would've loved him too.

Dear Mrs. Pope,
Alice and I wish to let you know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. May the hope of I Thessalonians 4: 13-14 sustain you in the days ahead. I remember some fun fishing trips with Darrell.

Love in Christ,

Well done thy faithful servant, a true hero to all of us who have graduated from CJ at PCC. We was an encourager and one who truly loved each of us. He still inspires me to this day everytime I "put on suit" to do our best. God Bless you.

I remember you giving me one of the worse haircuts I've ever had before you'd let me be a counselor at Bible camp. I also remember you and Jeri driving 100 miles out of your way to visit me at college.
I remember you riding a horse, wearing a big cowboy hat and pistol as you served as the Grand Marshall of the Inner-City Bible Church annual parade. Nobody but you could have pulled that off.
I remember you never giving Norman, Billy or me any slack, and never doubting that you cared about us. We’re better men for knowing you.
In a world that seems to be all about getting, you were a man who gave. I live a long way from Michigan and don’t know if I’ll ever see your headstone, but I’m going to imagine that it reads like this;
“Darrell Pope - He Gave”
Thank you, Mr. Pope.

Dear Jeri - Our sympathy on the loss of Darrell. We winter in Arizona so will be unable to attend his memorial service. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. It's been years since we've seen either of you - perhaps you'll be back in the Summer or Fall. Darrell sure had a full life and will be missed by many. God bless.

I will certainly never forget the lessons I learned from Mr. Pope in his classes as well as the stories he told us about his career. Definitely a loss to those who knew him and even to those who will never know him but as has been said by many others, we'll see him again on the other side. Thank you Mr. Pope for all you taught us.

He was one of my favorite Criminal Justice teachers at PCC. I will be praying for his family
and his wife of 57 years of marriage. Please pray for the service that many
will be saved by his great testimony. He will be greatly missed by all who knew
him. I will always remember all his great stories from the Michigan State
Police.
He always stated to remember these three things, God, Family, Profession and he
always said, "Be Careful out there!"
