James Fillwock Obituary

James Jay Fillwock East Lansing TODAY, I LOST MY BEST FRIEND AND THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. James Jay Fillwock, passed away in the early hours of the morning on February 1, 2012, at the tender age of 58. Though he left us far too soon, he leaves a legacy of memories and life lessons that will stay with us forever. Jim taught us about courage, kindness, compassion, quiet strength and unconditional love. He taught us about enduring life's adversities without complaining. He never saw himself as anything other than an ordinary guy, but those who met him knew him as an extraordinary man. He was by his nature, the definition of a "good man." He loved to laugh and his sense of humor was often what drew people to him. The three most important things in life to Jim were his family and friends, his granddog Jack, and golf---- and, on any given day they weren't always in that order or importance. He was a wonderful husband to JoAnne and a great dad to Matthew. He leaves behind his wife of 27 years, JoAnne; son, Matthew Beard; parents, Bill and Pat Fillwock of Lansing; siblings, Judy (Maurice) Mead of Mason, Dennis (Linda) Fillwock of Albuquerque, NM, Jerry (Nancy) Fillwock of St. Johns; many, many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Jim. To his special Bush League buddies who brought so much joy and laughter into his life, he said to tell you all he's lining up tee times at the best golf courses in heaven and when you're ready to join him, he'll be waiting for you---but there's no rush, because Jim also taught us about patience. Our family would like to thank all of the wonderful doctors and nurses in the Sparrow Hospital ICU who cared for Jim during his seven week stay there. A special thanks to Dr. Marc Basson, who was Jim's biggest advocate and, until the end, never gave up hope that Jim could get better. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 4:00 pm at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 1730 E Grand River Ave, East Lansing. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W Grand River Ave, Lansing, MI 48910 or an animal shelter of your choice. A Celebration of Jim's life will be held the first day of golf season for the Bush League on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at El Dorado Golf Course between 1 and 4 p.m. On line condolences may made to www.greastlansing.com.

To the Fillwock Family. My heart is sadden to have just learned about the passing of my dear friend Jim. In Feb. 1977, I began working at MDOT and there I met a co-worker by the name of Jim Fillwork. We quickly found that we had alot in common. I use to work with his sister Judy at MSU and that we were born on the same day, same age, but had different parents. That was always our big "joke". Each year we would either call or stop by and wish each other a Happy Birthday. It was only in the last few years that we lost touch with each other. Jim was a wonderful person and I also agree that his Obituary said it all. God has taken one of the good guys. Now on "our" birthday, I will look up to heaven and wish him a Happy Birthday.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you. May God Bless You!

Dear JoAnne, My heart is filled with both sadness at your loss, and fond recollections of the times we spent together. Although I only saw him a couple times in the past decade, each time was as though it had only been a few weeks and not years. That was the essential Jim.No matter the time or the circumstance,he was consistently the same amazing guy.No one was easier to be around, and nobody made me laugh harder and quicker with fewer words than Jim.He will be deeply missed. You are and will be in my prayers

Dear JoAnne and Matt
Rick and I did not hear of Jim's passing. We would have been there for the family. He was a wonderful man. Always smiling and joking. He touched so many of us. We know he is in a beautiful place where we will all join him in a blink of his eyes. Complete peace, no more illness, a place of complete love. May God give you this peace until you see Jim again.

Dear JoAnne,
I'm so grateful that you and Jim had the years together that you did in this life. I feel such sadness when I think of you there without him. It was a pleasure to know him. I felt like I had a real opportunity to do that back in April, 2010. He was kind, genuine, and strong. You are the same. When you're ready, I hope you'll come to Maui to visit. There are some amazing, healing places I've discovered here and want to share with you when the time is right. Don't forget to plan this. With love and aloha...

I worked with Jim my entire career at MDOT. Even when Jim was ill years ago, he still had a caring for everyone around him and a smile would greed them each and everyday. He would always go out of his way to help anyone and required nothing in return , except a thank-you. I will miss my good friend "JIMMY" as we called him, but will be glad to see him up yonder someday, when he has no more pains, only that BIG SMILE. LARRY and DARLENE BUNKER
