Lucy Smythe Obituary

Lucy Marie (Schmitt) Smythe

Lucy Marie (Schmitt) Smythe died peacefully on October 4, 2016 in Perry, Michigan surrounded by her family. She was 66. Lucy enjoyed a distinguished career in Radiologic Technology, which began as a student in 1972 in the first radiographic class at Lansing Community College. She graduated from Cooley Law School and was sworn into the State of Michigan Bar in 1992. One of her greatest accomplishments was guiding students through LCC and area hospitals for over 40 years. She embraced technology in all aspects of her life. On the day she discovered that the "help desk" was just simply Googling the answers to problems, she decided she could be her own help desk. Lucy loved problem solving, and from then on was the help desk at work and at home for anyone who needed it. She was Pure Michigan; combing the beaches of Lake Michigan for Petoskey stones was a passion. She enjoyed life's simple joys: tending her peonies, a stack of unread books, quilting, honing her artisan bread skills, cheering on the Spartans, her large extended family, and her friends. She met each challenge with good humor and enthusiasm- just ask those who tried to beat her at Scrabble! She loomed large in our lives, and we will miss her.

She is survived by her husband, Mort, of 42 years; daughter Anna (David) Epkey and their son Alec Harris; son Dylan (Katie Simpson) and their daughter Ella Rae; and daughter Emma.

If you wish to honor Lucy's memory, please consider the LCC Foundation, 309 W. Washington Sq., Suite 201, Lansing, MI 48933 to support a radiology student scholarship.

The Celebration of Life Luncheon will be Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 12:00pm-3:00pm at the Bengel Wildlife Center, 6380 Drumheller Rd, Bath, MI. Bring your walking shoes if you would like to participate in the nature walk. The center is located on 259 acres, with abundant wildlife and trails, although we promise you that the nature walk will not include all 259 acres! What a beautifully written obituary for such a beautiful soul. Growing up as Anna's good friend, I spent a lot of time at the Smythe house. I will always cherish the warm welcome I felt when I was there as well as the delicious desserts and beautiful gardens that surrounded the home. Not only was she my best friend's mother but someone I always looked up to as a strong willed and intelligent woman. She will surely be missed by all. With love and condolences, The Hughes Family (Colleen, Ian, Dylan and Ella)

My heart felt sympathy to the Smyth family. Lucy was, and has always been, a tremendous influence to my career as a Radiologic Technologist for over 30 years. She will always remain a friend and colleague.
