I am so sorry to hear that Scott passed away. I deeply enjoyed Scott and he had a very positive impact on me when I was a Grad student at Michigan State. He had his direct and rough edges and was very personal at the same time. I kept in touch for many years. I was a plant pathology/horticultural grad student and needed help with statistical analysis. Scott wrote me personalized software to do analysis on the type of data I had - totally up his ally - plant pathology epidemiology data with a more complicated need for statistics. He linked it to his PlotIT software. I ended up TA'ing for him and used the PlotIT Software for years; even now - that is why I searched for him. I was looking to secure a new validation code as it expired! He was very creative and good in the design of the software such that I have not found (nor sought) other packages for specific types of work needed.
In a very late way - I commemorate him and am thankful I knew him and deeply cared for him. Though it is a long time since he passed, I write this in honor of Scott. God weaves a tapestry that is best, yet mysterious, and I am thankful that God used Scott in my early grad years to weave Scott's kindness and expertise into my life. (This year, I will be his age when he passed, 59). Blessings to his family should this be read.

I received my last Email from Scott in November last year (2012). Reading this today on the Penn State Email list brought an immediate tear.
Those of us who constantly traded kidding Email insults with Scott or watched the PSU CDs he would send will miss him.

Excitement, danger, conspiracy, fun, a knowing glance, a twinkling eye, a devastating comment, an encouraging sigh, a penetrating question, and then off he'd go. Having Eisensmith stop by your cube was never dull. I had worked for many bosses, but none of them prepared me for working for Scott. Having worked for Scott, I felt ready to work for anyone. I'll be telling stories about this man until I meet him again. He was a pain in the butt, a fascinating person, and a hell of a story teller. I considered him a friend. I am sad that he had to go.

My sympathy to Michael, Melissa, Suzanne, Laurie, Randy and extended family; the world is a better place for having had Scott in it, even if only for those 59 years.Someday his grandchildren will read his obituary and realize what a "cool grandpa" they missed out on. I think I underestimated Scott in high school. He had the strength of character to pursue his own interests. How or why he was interested in snakes, I'll never know, but he did have a passion about them and he followed his passion. I'm sorry to hear about his death.
