Gary Dawson Obituary

Gary Alan Dawson LUBBOCK-Gary Alan Dawson joined his Heavenly Father on Aug. 4, 2013, at the age of 56. Born in Lubbock on July 17, 1957, to William H. and Dorthea Dawson, Gary spent most of his life in Lubbock. In early life he attended Vandelia Church of Christ, graduated from Lubbock Christian High School, and earned his professional engineering degree from Texas Tech University. Gary married Kathy Mahaffey in 1981, and after living in Brownfield, Texas, for 2 years, the couple returned to Lubbock for the remainder of Gary's life. Gary is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Aaron and his wife Deanna; children, Emie and Will; son, Tyler and his wife Katie; sister, Cyndi DuPont and family; and sister, Terri Bennett and family. Gary pursued a 25 year career as a civil engineer, first at the Texas Department of Transportation, then over 20 years with the firm Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper, Inc.Gary served The Kingdom of God through the Monterey Church of Christ congregation, including his role as an elder for 10 years. Gary's charitable work included children's ministry at Monterey and missions to Brazil, but most of his charity was performed in day-to-day interactions as he found ways to show Christ's love to others. Gary's strongest trait was his love of Jesus. Through his faith, Gary let his Christ-like love shine in all of his dealings, and the people around him were constantly changed for the better by Gary's friendship. The Dawson family gives special thanks to PSC and its employees and Frenship ISD and its employees for their support and to Dr. David Close, Dr. Michael Robertson and Hospice of Lubbock for their exceptional care. Service will be held at Monterey Church of Christ at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. In lieu of flowers, Gary has requested donations to The Monterey Foundation benefitting Same Light Ministries or to Hospice of Lubbock.

There are some in this world that you could never count how many they influenced in their lives to "live for Jesus". Gary was married to my second cousin but I know them both through Kathy's mom, my first cousin. As both a cousin and a sister in Christ I am still praying for you.

May the many memories of the time you shared with Gary, bring you great comfort at this time. I knew Gary in high school & college. He was one of the highlights during those years in many ways. Contagious sense of humor, positive outlook brought joy to those of us who knew him. A true man of God. Dear Gary: thank you for the music, love, laughter and camaraderie. I am grateful for having known you & look forward to the great 'reunion'. I pray for peace that passes all understanding for your loved ones.

Our precious family, we loved Gary so much for the Christian life he lived everyday and in every situation. We loved him for being the perfect Husband for Kathy and the outstanding Dad he was to Aaron & Tyler and the caring, loving, fun PawPaw to his Grandchildren. Gary was also our outstanding son-in-law for 32 years. We are praying for Kathy and Aaron & Tyler and their families as they adjust to life without him and for his sisters and their families. We love all of you very, very much. Betty & Dennis Mahaffey (Kathy's parents)

Kathy You and the family have my deepest sympathy. Gary was the first Elder that I got acquainted with when i started to Monterey. He was a fighter and I know he had the love of the Lord in his heart. Also the love of his family. I learned to love the both of you very much. I can not attend the Memorial service today as I teach a china painting class today. Charles will be there.. You have my blessings.

To Gary's family: blessings from our Christian School are inumerble. Gary is one of our great host of balcony boosters(Heb.12:1), cheering us on to the finish. A light in the darkness, a gentle voice in the silence, a precious touch in the quiet...that is Gary...but...To be on the front row in chorus @LCH w/other girls, We received dozens of "spit-bubble" kisses from Gary on the top row as he created them & they floated down! So when I see tiny bubbles or hear a certain tenor of laughter, I'll again thank God for Gary! God bless you all w/precious memories ever before you....Linda Rigney Patterson (Edmond,OK)

Gary was such a blessing to so may people. I remember on several occasions we would have a member from Singing Oaks that was either moving to Lubbock or had family in Lubbock that needed help and I could always count on my fellow elder to minister to them. I know we will all miss you but we will carry on the good work just as you would want us to do. We will all be reunited some day but until then we will continue to soldier on for our Lord.

Gary, I have thought of many things to say here, but the only one that sounds right is, Thanks for being a friend. You were a mentor, boss, example and many more but a friend is what I will remember most.

Kathy, Aaron, and Tyler Dawson - and families and friends. We have kept up with Gary's situation through Denice Pernell. He was lucky to have had such a loving family and to have had such success in his professional caareer. He was even more fortunate to have shared his passion for the church with those whose lives he touched. We are praying for all of you, Kathy, and please know that your sister and her family and you Roswell family will give you extra strength at this time! Our love!

Kathy, fond memories of Gary growing up at Monterey and the many hours we spent together on weekends and during the summer. Gary refered to himself as "my little brother". My love for him and respect has only grown over the years. Heaven is a brighter place this day because of Gary. Our love to you and the family.
