Phyllis Martin Obituary

Phyllis Kay Johnston Martin LOCKNEY-Phyllis Kay Johnston Martin, 62, returned to her heavenly home on Dec. 13, 2015, after a valiant battle with cancer. Her faith in Christ carried her through this struggle and provides comfort for her family. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015, at the Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Lockney. There will be a memorial service on Dec. 18, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Lockney, Texas, with Reverends Joseph Tillery and Gene Hawkins officiating. Kay was born to G.B. and Naomi Johnston, on March 18, 1953. She graduated from Lockney High School in 1971 and attended Texas Tech University for two years. Kay married her high school sweetheart Jim Martin on May 26, 1973. Living together in Lockney, Jim and Kay raised three children and started their own insurance agency. Kay was a loving and devoted mother and was heavily involved in her church and community. Kay began her faith journey in the First Baptist Church of Lone Star, before becoming a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockney. She served her church in many capacities including VBS director, Sunday school teacher, and numerous committees. Throughout her journey she exemplified the model of putting God first in all aspects of life. She was a decorated 4-H leader, a member of the Lockney City Council, a past member of both the Lockney and Floydada Economic Development Corporations, a member of Lockney Chamber of Commerce, and a dedicated member of many other organizations. MawMaw, as she was known, played a major role in the lives of all eight of her grandchildren. Her presence here on earth will be dearly missed, but her loved ones are at peace knowing that our Creator has welcomed her home to rest in His healing hands. Kay is survived by her husband, Jim Martin of Lockney, Texas; their son, Allen Martin; his wife, Brandy; their two sons, Jon and Jett of Canyon, Texas; their daughter, Cynthia Schlueter, her husband, Shad, their four children Tristan, Tasha, Tucker, and Trinity of Lockney, Texas; her daughter, Sarah Dewbre, her husband, Ryan, their two children, Charlie and Hannah of Corpus Christi, Texas; her mother, Naomi Johnston of Lubbock, Texas; her brothers, Barry Johnston and Chris Johnston; and her sister, Lori Bean. She is preceded in death by her father, G.B. Johnston Jr.; her son, Michael Martin; and her grandparents. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to Hospice Hands of West Texas, the W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the First Baptist Church of Lockney.

Kay was such a wonderful 4-H leader! I enjoyed working with her on the D2 Volunteer Leaders Association. She always had the best records! She has left a great legacy as a volunteer leader that loved the 4-H program and kids! Prayers for comfort and peace for your family.
