Joseph Castro Obituary

JOSEPH CASTRO Joseph Armand Castro, 82, of Las Vegas, passed away Dec. 13, 2009. He was a talented musician, loving husband and father, and a dear friend to many. Born Aug. 15, 1927, in Miami, Ariz., he was the son of John and Lucy Castro of Pittsburg, Calif. He began playing music professionally, as a pianist, at the age of 15. Joe enrolled at San Jose State University, but his attendance was interrupted twice - first by a stint in the U.S. Army, and later when he formed his first jazz trio working on both the West Coast and in Hawaii. In 1956, Joe moved to New York City, where his trio successfully appeared in the city's top jazz clubs - Basin Street East, The Embers, The Hickory House and Birdland. He was critically lauded by the likes Leonard Feather, and Dave Brubeck, who had known Castro since the early 1950s. In 1958, he moved to Los Angeles to be associated almost exclusively with renowned jazz musicians: Teddy Edwards, Billy Higgins and Leroy Vinnegar. Castro recorded and performed extensively with The Teddy Edwards Quartet while also making two of his own recordings as a leader for Atlantic Records. The first album entitled, "Mood Jazz" (1956), and the second entitled, "Groove Funk Soul" (1958). Throughout the 50's and 60's, Joe toured the world playing in a variety of venues - The London Palladium, The Mars Club in Paris, and Bricktop's in Rome. He played with jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Zoot Sims and Oscar Pettiford. Later, tobacco heiress/jazz enthusiast Doris Duke and then long-term boyfriend, Castro, along with silent partner and friend, Duke Ellington, formed record company Clover Records and music publishing company Jo-Do. Castro's third album as a leader entitled, "Lush Life" was the only album released on Clover Records. From 1959 to 1960, Castro also backed vocalists Anita O'Day, June Christy, and was the music director for Tony Martin from 1961 to 1963. While working, writing and arranging for the Hawaiian Symphony, he met and married vocalist/pianist Loretta Faith Haddad in 1966. They were married for 41 years until her death in June 2008. Joe and Loretta performed and lived together in Hawaii and Los Angeles before eventually moving to Las Vegas in 1971, where they raised two sons. Joe continued to accompany vocalists and play in Las Vegas pit bands, and arranging for the likes of Joe Williams, Count Basie and Al Hibbler until he became the musical director for the Tropicana Hotel's Folies Bergere. He retired in the late 80's, but continued to play in jazz combos until his death. He is survived by his sons, John (Cynthia) Castro of New York City, and James (Lisa) Castro of Las Vegas. All will miss his proud/gregarious nature and sense of humor, but most importantly, the gift of music he gave and inspired to so many. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd.

Joe, who went to San Jose State my uncle, Cliff Aronson, practically lived at our house in San Jose, I´m told he changed my diapers. Anyway, he was great friends with my mom & dad, Evelyn & Gus Kringen, and we were in and out if his life, attended his Coconut Grove debut with Tony Martin in `61, spent the night at Falcon´s Lair, drove Joe to practice sessions with Teddy Edwards, and he & Doris to the airport, and drove his Mercedes 300SL to high school for a week, discovering huge but fleeting popularity. We lost contact with Joe around 1970 and dad died in `72. I´m sorry I didn´t keep in touch with Joe. I remember Joe as brilliant, funny, classy, charming, occasionally moody, with perfect white teeth and a smile that could light up a room. Just unforgettable. If his son´s read this I´d love to connect with them & share memories of Joe, to complete the circle.

Joe was the best. A phenomenal musical talent and incredibly kind-hearted human being. I remember him letting me sit up in the balcony with the orchestra during the Folies Bergere performances, and observe all the great musicians he recruited for that awesome ensemble! Miss ya', Pal. God Bless. Sincerely, Mike & Sam Distefano (of the Riviera Hotel & Casino days).

John C. and Family --

Sincere condolences; heard about your loss from recent contact w/ Devon, thought I'd look up some info/poss. contact approach -- found this opp'ty to send sympathy. Yes, never met your pop, but reading about him (and your late mom), wow -- fine people. (Devon actually did play me a number of Joe's records one aft. in Queens a few yrs ago, explaining you/dad/Vegas music bg to me, having asked.) And your parents passing on the gift of music, a (way of) life enriched by it, listening, playing, loving it -- a decidedly deathless and pretty incalculably precious inheritance, no?
Best,
David

As John C’s friend I had the pleasure of knowing Joe. He treated me like a son even though I only had a few opportunities to spend time with him. He even hosted me in Las Vegas when John was not around or busy. He was very generous with him self and incredibly entertaining as a personality. He was the kind of person you actually wish you had more opportunities to spent time with. Peace be with you.

Jimmy, Lisa, John, and Cynthia,

We love you guys like we loved your parents. We are going to miss them very much. They have always been wonderful neighbors, friends, and family to us all. We miss listening to Loretta's stories and seeing her everyday when she would stop by, and we will miss listening to her singing and to Joe playing the piano as wonderfully as he did. The world already seems empty without them both, and it will be hard for us to accept that they are both gone. We believe that they together are in a much better place now, singing and playing with the angels in heaven. We all will always be there for you guys. God bless. We love you all.

Dear John and James,
I'm so grateful for the couple of times I got to meet your Dad. He was a charismatic fellow full of great stories. I was in awe just listening to him tell me about all the wonderful music venues he played. He was playful and had a zest for life and he loved your Mom very much. I hope to be as lucky. His legacy will live on in memories and musical recordings. He had a musical gift and he really let it shine and passed his knowledge on to both of you. I'm honored to call you my friends and you're in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. It's up to guys to carry the torch and live a life that would make your Father proud. Our time is so precious and short.
I love you,
Steve Poltz

Joe and I go back to the 50's when he was with Anita O'Day & June Christy. It seems we would always end up on the same circuit, in the same towns, and many times after our gigs we would get together and jam all night in a frat house or some club. The next time I saw him was in Vegas years later. He came up behind me and gave me a great big hug, and that began another great, long term relationship. What a great person and a great player. We'll all surely miss him. That should really be one beautiful jam session up where he'll be. Bless him!
John, my Love to you and Yours!

Joe Castro is a name I often heard mentioned in our house from my earliest memories. My father, Bruce Hamada, along with bassist Edd Shonk worked with Joe in his trio here in Honolulu. My dad was very fond of Joe and was very saddened to hear of Joe's passing. On behalf of my dad, our heartfelt condolences to the family. He will not be forgotten.
With Much Aloha,
Bruce Hamada Jr.
