LEO STEWART Obituary

LEO STEWART Leo King Stewart returned to his Heavenly Father Feb. 25, 2015, with his loving family at his side. Our loving husband, dad, uncle, brother, grandfather and "Papa Stewart" will be greatly missed. Leo was born Nov. 15, 1930, in Alamo, to Paul Edward Stewart and Ethel Louise Higbee. Brother and sisters, Eugene, Maxine, Lila, Pauline and Ethel all welcomed their baby brother. Leo's mother passed away when he was 15 months old from pneumonia. His father eventually remarried and four more children were born to this family, Carma, Donna, Edward and Yvonne. During his high school years, he spent his time helping his father on the ranch and playing basketball and football for Pahranagat Valley High School. After high school, Leo attended BYU and competed on the rodeo team. He was a champion calf and team roper. For the rest of his life he was an ardent BYU enthusiast. After his service in the military, he met and married Delores Ethel London. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple Sept. 26, 1957. From this union came six children, Lorrie, Gene, Pam, Michelle, Leola and Paul. He was dedicated to raising his children with love, compassion and kindness. He taught them the rancher's way of life. It wasn't uncommon to see Leo's babies in his arms while riding a horse. His children were all taught at his knee many lessons of life, faith and service. Leo experienced a whole new love when he became a grandpa. He dedicated his later years to supporting each of his grandchildren in their many endeavors. He was welcomed to Heaven with open arms by his mother; father; brother, Eugene; sisters, Maxine and Lila; brother-in-law, Bruce; son, Paul; and daughter, Leola. He is survived by his loving wife, Delores Stewart; and his children, Lorrie Stewart, Lawrence Eugene (Debbie) Stewart, Pamela Stewart, Michelle (Stuart) Jones and Meri (David) Holman. He isvalso survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as his siblings, Shirl Brown, Pauline (Gene) Simpson, Ethel (Tommy) Seletos, Donna Chapel, Edward (Cathy) Stewart and Yvonne (Tim) Mason. Viewing will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 1. Viewing again at 9 a.m. Monday, March 2, with services following at 11 a.m., all at the Alamo LDS Chapel. Graveside services following at the Alamo Cemetery.

Rest in peace Leo Stewart. I did not know you but I wish I had. It sounds like you were a good man.

I'm so sad to hear of Leo's passing. I remember as a young teen, going to Leo's and Lorie's place to ride horses with my cousins, Kayleen and Karla. Leo was always so kind, and I always though of him as a true cowboy and rancher. He comes from, and leaves behind, a great family legacy, as do many other Stewarts. I pray that your family will find peace in recalling wonderful memories, and hope in a glorious family reunion some day. My mom, Joyce Adams, also send her condolences.

In mid July 1957, when I returned from my LDS mission to Texas, Leo was the first person to offer me a job, working for Wells/Stewart Construction on a new highway in Ruby Valley, Nevada. Not only that, but Leo and his father Paul provided me and my friend Dale Hunt a tent to sleep in, and Leo shuttled us all to Alamo and back to Ruby Valley each weekend. I earned enough that summer to pay for a year of college. Later on, I taught English to all of Leo and Lori's 6 children in junior high and high school, as well as being a Scoutmaster to Gene and Paul. Great memories indeed.

Leo was my hero. When I was a baby, I had a lot of colic and he would help my parents by carrying me while riding a horse, even late into the night. It was the only thing that worked sometimes. Leo gave me my first horse, a little mustang filly, and I got the idea of being on the BYU rodeo team because Leo did. I remember him a a kind, gentle man who always had a good word of encouragement for me. Even when he was correcting me he would say, "Now, Maryellen, I know you are not going to like this, but . . ." My parents, Wilson and Mary Stewart, loved him like a son and we all thought of Leo and Lorrie as a special part of our family too.

Leo got such a kick out of his children and grandchildren, and I am not surprised that he dedicated so much time and care to them. Leo was that kind of person. We have been so fortunate to know him.

Love to all, Maryellen Stewart

I will really miss his sermon on ou runs to gathering strays on the ranges. And the friendship we shared over the years. Things I had learned from him and the misadventures we have gone n.

As a young child I remember all the hard work he did helping with the Sagebrush Riders. He was a very talented rider and educator. He had a way with children that they all loved to be around him and learn. He will be missed not just by his family but this little valley he called home.
