Macon, Georgia - Candy Chanin Burgess, 76, of Macon, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was born in Macon, Georgia, on August 29, 1945. Candy is survived by her devoted husband, Malcolm Stewart Burgess, Jr., of Macon; children; Sandy Burgess of Macon, and Becky Burgess of Atlanta; grandchildren; Jude and Kate; brother, Robert Chanin (Carol); sister, Robin Stevens (Tom); and several nieces and nephews.
She attended Alexander III and IV. Candy graduated from A.L. Miller High with honors in 1963 and from University of Georgia in 1967. That same year, she and Malcolm Burgess were married. Their family grew to include two children; Sandy and Becky; and two grandchildren; Jude and Kate.
After working for the C&S National Bank for several years, Candy became a community volunteer. Her many activities included being President of the Museum of Arts and Sciences, The Museum Guild, President of the Junior League of Macon, and a substitute teacher at Stratford Academy. She was also on the boards of The United Way, American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, Wesleyan College, The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, and The McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University. She was on the founding board of Carlyle Place.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 23, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of Hart's at the Cupola. A private burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery. Due to Covid, the family requests no visitation at this time, but appreciates your love and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Candy's honor to The Museum of Arts and Sciences, 4182 Forsyth Road, Macon, GA 31210, or to The Candy and Malcolm Burgess Scholarship at the McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University, 1501 Mercer University Drive, Macon, Georgia 31207.
